Finally one I won't break!
I read some bad reviews, so I wasn't sure what to expect but I'm very happy with it. The "close" function doesn't refer to the lid, but to the strainer itself which actually has a mechanism you can close once it's pushed down. Pretty neat! So you want to make sure that it's OPEN when you actually push it down! There were also several people who complained about an awful noise when you pull the strainer back up and that's not the case with mine. Not sure if they made improvements since then, but there is no noise. I love it and would buy it again!

Awful scraping sound
In retrospect, stoneware isn't the best choice for a French press, or at least not for the way this BonJour press is designed. I love the way it looks (festive for the winter holidays), but that's about all I like. First, I was disappointed to see that large blocks of styrofoam were used to package the product. This is not ecologically responsible. Shaped paperboard egg crate inserts should be used, which can be recycled. Ergonomically, I don't like the way it creates an awful scraping sound when the plunger is pulled up. I was expecting the filter to have some sort of silicone ring or flange around it to create a seal and prevent scraping, but there's not. Metal against ceramic not only sounds awful, but will eventually leave marks. I can already see the streaks after a few uses. All the presses I own are either made of borosilicate glass or stainless steel. Ceramic is the least resistant to thermal expansion (going from temperature extremes quickly). French presses are great because they allow hot water to fully penetrate the tea leaves or coffee grinds, resulting in a stronger, more fully flavored brew, compared to drip percolation. Get one made from borosilicate instead, which has the added benefit of being able to see through. In addition, this press holds 32 oz. A traditional cup of coffee is 8 oz, not 4, unless you're talking about espresso. I don't see anything innovative about their touted "flavor lock filter". It's the same steel mesh I have on my other filters. To disassemble and clean the filter, hold the plunger rod firmly with one hand (near the knob is easiest) and twist the filter assembly with the other (top part with the coils is called the "spiral plate" and the bottom is called the "cross plate"). It will unscrew and come off for brushing out. I wish I knew this when I owned my first Bodum. I destroyed the cross plate trying to figure out how to get in between the crevices.

A Few Flaws But Still Quite Nice
The BonJour Stoneware French Press in the red stripes offering is quite pretty. The style and coloring fits nicely in my kitchen and sort of brings a cheerful wakening of the senses when looked at. The press holds exactly 32 ounces of liquid on the inside not 8 cups unless you typically drink cups at are 4 ounces each. I feel it's important to note it's not actually 8 full liquid cups. The weight of the press is heavier than expected and can be a bit tiring to hold after long periods of time if my joints are bothering me. I have found the spout to drip after pouring which can be bothersome at times if I don't have something on hand to wipe it up. Note this is to be handwashed only and is not dishwasher safe. I do really like how it keeps the inner content warmer longer than any other press I've had. This is good for when it's chillier in the home or office. It has been holding up well with regular use. The handle hasn't become wobbly. The inner press parts aren't showing signs of wearing out or needing replaced. I feel if properly cared for that the press will last a very long time. IF not used for coffee or tea it would make a lovely reusable container as well.

French press for a crowd, or camping?
This is a traditional French press on steroids. It holds ALOT. Which is great if you need a bunch of coffee. But if you don't, since it doesn't keep the contents hot, you will have lukewarm coffee quick. I could see this working well for camping, although it's far too pretty. You just have to use it and account for small batches. The exterior is very attractive and eye-catching, crisp red and white. But, like I said, as most French presses, it does NOT keep contents hot like a coffee pot. This makes 8 small or 4 large cups (not demitasse).

Very cute but not as practical
This French press is cute but not as practical as I would have hoped. The handle and top knob are made out of wood so that might be a problem long term. The lid really slides around lot when you try to press the coffee, I'm always afraid that its going to break when I've used it. Using the press is the same as most presses you push down and then close the mesh with a turn of the knob so you can put the coffee out. It is bit of a production to get this clean, I think I'll go back to my drip coffee.

I find it a bit awkward to use
I'm kind of a stoneware buff, so I thought this was a cool idea. It's pretty and fun, but it turned out to not be all that functional. There's a warning in the instructions about not sitting it down on a cold counter. I know stoneware/ceramic is temperature-sensitive, but not on the counter? That's going a bit far for me. It's also somewhat awkward to handle. The lid is pretty deep and has the expected rubber (or whatever) ring around it. The push stem has to be finagled to get the lid on tight and it's a bit annoying. Lastly, I miss watching it press more than I thought I would. So, neat idea, just doesn't suit me as much as I'd hoped. It's a 3 star for me, but if you don't have my hangups, I think it's worth considering.
