Top Quality: Get Chapin, not Agri-Fab
I first bought the Agri-Fab 45-0530 and was disappointed. It's very cheaply made, especially the key part: the flow control mechanism. So I shopped and found the Chapin, which is almost twice the price. However, everything about the Chapin 8622B tow spreader is significantly superior to the Agri-Fab 45-0530. It’s like comparing a Yugo to a BMW. The Chapin is solid as a rock; really heavy duty constriction, made to last. It’s farm grade. When unpackaging, I examined the parts closely with glee. I kept hearing my Dad’s voice in my head saying, “You get what you paid for.” Yep. The frame, wheels, tub, and above all the two most critical parts -- the mechanism to adjust the volume, and the gearing mechanism -- are pro or farm grade construction. See the product image showing the cast metal gears; the gear housing even has a nipple to add grease. That seems like a small thing, but it's not. It an indication of quality engineering and design to last, not "planned obsolescence" as with so many throw-away products these days. Quite conveniently, it was nearly all assembled out of the box, also unlike the Agri-Fab. With the Chapin, I only had to assemble the tow assembly. It took 20 min. A customer wrote a review in April, 2023 complaining about the assembly difficulty. That certainly wasn’t my experience. A photo from a different reviewer, Doug, from June 5, 2019, shows how few parts there are to put together. If someone can’t figure that out, they probably have difficulty installing a light bulb. I agree with the rest of Doug's review too. Even the bolts and little parts come neatly packaged and labeled, not jumbled willy-nilly in a plastic bag, as his picture shows. I’ve used it twice on a 5000 sq ft lawn area and it works perfectly. When you stop, the flow of material automatically stops. To be sure, you have to get off to make adjustments to the flow if needed. And you have to set it to zero if you want to drive without material being spread. But I’m OK with that. The Agri-Fab does allow one to remain seated and try (TRY!) to make adjustments, but the Agri-Fab’s control mechanism is such a cheap piece of junk that doesn't work as intended. You can see how cheap the Agri-Fab is just from looking it after buying. It isn’t worth it. The Chapin also comes with a cover for the tub (nice!) AND notice the shape of the tub itself. Another example of clever attention to engineering detail. It’s not rectangular; it has a pointed middle so that you can just tip it over forwards and pour out any remaining content into a box or bag. Love It. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

Amazing Spreader
I bought this spreader because I'm 60 and am tired of pushing a manual spreader. The auto stop feature was the main reason I purchased this spreader. Similar spreaders with a handle for on/off would not work for my mower since I site too far forward. The Chapin spreader assembly took me about 40 minutes. It was pretty easy - the hardest part was getting the nuts and bolts out of the package. I have about 3 acres of land. I used the spreader to over seed a lawn. The spreader works as advertised and product is dispensed very evenly. The indent adjustments can be put to zero for transportation which closes the hole that the product dispenses from. This spreader has pretty beefy tires which makes pulling it easy. It does take two people in the beginning to experiment with the indents to get the correct setting for seed/fertilizer etc.. Once this is set then the other person is not needed. The other thing to keep in mind is that you need to look back at the spreader once in a while to make sure that there is still product left. I really would like a side mirror on my zero turn mower. Time will tell if this spreader continues to impress but so far it is saving my back from pushing my old spreader and works perfectly. I highly recommend it.

Bad instructions
The spreader works fine but getting it setup was a mess. Not too hard, but complicated. When I got to the end of the assembly, about an hour, I pulled it by hand and the auger was not turning. I went back to the instructions and there was nothing I didn't do correct. I then looked at the leftover parts and I didn't see anything obvious. (The instructions did say you may not need all the included parts for your model.) So I called customer support and was on hold for like 45 minutes. Then I see it. There is a separate bag with a bolt and nut in it. It has a tiny piece of paper and says "Attention: Fasten axle and gearbox together using bolt and locknut provided in bag." Not a mention in the instructions. Nothing! Took 30 seconds and it works fine. Almost like an afterthought. I guarantee others have had the same issue.

Easy to use
Perfect when attaching to lawnmower. Not sure that I had it set right to adequately fertilize lawn. I will know in time. Had some difficulty assembling. Some needed pars were not provided but was able to purchase at Home Depot. The major parts were assembled by manufacture. It’s certainly easier to use than the ones that you must push.

This thing is a game changer
I have used other spreaders from my neighbours but they were a hassle to start and stop. This Chapin unit caught my eye and the reviews were great (except the ones from dumb users who don't understand physics). I have a Chapin backpack sprayer and it is fantastic 7 years old and no signs of wear. You fill the hopper and go, there is no spilling while it's filled and none when you stop. It is well made and easy to assemble.

Check before using
Just another quality control issue out of China. The spreader is well designed. The problem I have with mine is the main shaft was bent. With it wobbling it popped all the screws that hold the metering gate and shoot onto the bottom of the hopper. I'm hoping to fix it at work cause I know it will be a issue to get the shaft replaced since I know they'll want the complete unit returned.

Sur glace en hiver
Roue motrice manque d'adhérence sur surface tres glacée. Je pense a m'acheter une chaine pour le pneu moteur pour un épandage plus régulier.
