High quality, German-made adapters
I've wanted to switch to some kind of quick disconnect system over the years, having seen a plot of professional/commercial applications in nurseries and the like (and tiring of the battle to spin accessories on/off hoses over the years), but up until now, nothing had been satisfactory. The few I tried, whether metal or plastic, were always just absolute junk and turned me off to the whole concept. Enter the Gardena products and, in particular, this adapter. I bought it to swap out for the plastic one that came with my 7-in-1 Gardena sprayer, because you can't snug the plastic ones down without fear of breaking it and I wanted something that would endure better in the desert sun. There are still plastic parts on this adapter, of course, but not the critical connection to the hose where you want to snug it up and prevent any leaks. And, for those curious, unlike the grey vs. orange (Euro vs. North American) thread issue, I encountered absolutely no leaks when using these on my good old USA-made hoses. Whether it's because you can tighten them more or because they fit North American hose, I cannot say, but they don't leak a drop and that's the bottom line. In terms of fit and finish, these bad boys are miles ahead of the junk at the home improvement and big box retail outlets. They are heavy/weighty in the hand and that heft almost always correlates with quality. No cheap parts, no cheap metal, just loads of German engineered and German-made, uncompromising quality. The connections are quick, simple and rock solid, especially when coupled with metal adapters, although these will work with either metal or plastic versions, as they are fully interchangeable. In my case, I snagged two of these and one of the 39022-G premium metal adapters, and was able to rig up a complete system for my backyard needs. Slap the 39022-G on one end of your hose, the 39018 on the other and then a second 39018 to your hose bib and voila. You can now quick disconnect your watering implements (e.g. sprayers, sprinklers, etc.) from the end of the hose AND you can disconnect the hose from the hose bib at will. For those that might want to store their hose or be able to quickly remove it to make it easier to untangle or coil up, this will save you tons of time. Being able to swivel it on both ends will also make it easier to deal with snags/kinks. I could not be happier, and I am re-ordering another set to do the same setup with the hose in my front yard. Absolutely fantastic product, light years ahead of the import junk and other garbage out there. Highly recommended.

Great idea..but not perfect..
I have used Gardena products in the past and liked them. 4 stars only as it leaked like a sieve even with it connected properly. Complicity with older plastic connections is questionable, one broke off in this thing when I tried to switch out watering tools.

German-made quality!
Top quality, made-in-Germany adapter for your garden hoses, to be used with the Gardena system. Typical set up is to screw one of these on the female end of your garden hose and then slap a model 39004-G onto the hose bib and couple the two together. This is nice, except that if you want to connect two hoses together, you then need a double sided male adapter, which is not sold (to my knowledge) in a metal configuration (and I wouldn't trust a plastic one). If you need one, you can make one by combining this 39004-G with a 39022-G to get a double-sided metal version, but that's an expensive setup. In my case, I prefer to use a 39018 screwed onto the (male) hose bib connection, a 39022-G screwed into the female end of the hose and another 39018 on the other (male) end of the hose. In either setup, you invest in 3 pieces of the Gardena system in order to be able to quick-disconnect your hoses at both ends, but if you go with the latter, you can connect two hoses in series without ever needing an adapter. Furthermore, if you remove your hose from the hose bib to store it, you won't leave your 39004-G out in the open with its rubber seal rotting in the elements. The only downside is that if you have a 39018 on the hose bib, the water-stop features means you can't use the hose bib without a hose or other connector inserted into it. For dedicated outside gardening/watering hose bibs, I don't know the last time I wanted to use it without a hose connector, so this is a non-issue for me, but your measurements might vary. An alternative to mitigate the water-stop on the hose bib side, albeit more expensive, would be to get a double sided female adapter and connect this 39017 directly to your hose bib with that, rather than using a 39018. This way you get the benefit of not needing an adapter to connect hoses in series, AND you can flow water out of the spigot/hose bib freely when you disconnect the hose (via the 39022-G). All that said, I did purchase one of these 39017's just in case I needed it or wanted to change configurations, or if I needed to build an adapter of some kind. These are top quality, German-made components and miles beyond the Melnor, Gilmour and other imported China junk you can find at the stores these days. I'd been a Luddite for years, avoiding a quick disconnect system, because of quality issues with the components. Gardena has been a welcome change and I'll gladly pay the premium for their authentic, German parts.

7/10
I wanted to love it but unfortunately it started leaking only after 2 days of use, which I not normal for a product at this price. I checked the seals, but it wasn’t from the area that you connect the hose, but from the small gap between the orange and the metal. It was just disappointing because I always felt like Gardena products were high quality, but I’ve noticed a decline in quality that’s for sure.

Very Pricey
I have used the Gardena cheaper, plastic equivalent for years. They work well but can tend to break. After one broke where the hose attaches to my pressure washer, I decided that application needed the metal version to deal with any stress from the hose. This adapter is very well made and looks like it should last a long time. Would have been 5 star if cheaper!

The solution for the plastic ones
The plastic equivalent of this particular piece is virtually useless if you have any kind of four season climate. All of my plastic equivalents to this part have failed or cracked in some way. Going for this metal piece is the smart way to go because it can handle the elements over a long period of time as well as significant torsion over a plastic piece of the same kind. The biggest problem with this thing is the cost for what you are getting.

Save the frustration
Save the frustration of broken fittings due to heavy-duty 5/8" hoses hanging off the plastic fitting. My sprinklers have about an 8" rise from the ground to the fitting, it never fails when someone or something snags the hose I have to replace the plastic fitting. I love Gardena hose products, I've used them for years, but the plastic fittings are the weak point of the Gardena system. Perhaps if the plastic was a thicker they wouldn't snap off.
