Must freeze the gasket
Please read the other reviews. The comments about freezing the gasket between two pieces of boards is a must. You cannot put enough pressure on the unit to get it to Mount without doing so. I only froze it for one hour versus the 24 hours that others said. Once that was done it attached with ease.

Works well if you follow the installation tricks
After 22 years my old gasket was leaking. I read the other reviews that described the installation tricks and now I have a working toilet. After I opened the box I took off the gasket and placed it between two pieces of wood. Then I clamped the pieces together until the gasket was about 1/2 as thick. Then I placed that in the freezer for a couple of hours at least. While I waited I test fit the valve assembly and found that when turned about 45 degrees (away from the float valve) it slid into the hole without any trouble with the 3 tabs. When the freezing time was over I quickly brought the clamped wood to the toilet area, removed the gasket, slid it back onto the valve assembly, and inserted it into the toilet. It took some hand pressure to get it in far enough to turn but not enough to require any tool leverage. Then I turned it upright and let the gasket thaw for an hour. That made the assembly feel solidly in place, so I hooked up the chain, turned on the water, and tested it. Everything worked fine.

Freeze the Gasket!
Very hard to install. But whoever came up with the "freeze method," made it easy. Clamp the gasket between two pieces of wood to about half its thickness and put it in the freezer for a couple hours. Try-fit the valve without the gasket to see how the plastic tabs engage into the porcelain. Then slip the frozen gasket onto the valve housing, insert it into the porcelain at a 45 degree angle and rotate it vertical. I had some concern that freezing the gasket might keep it from expanding to normal width, but it works fine - no leaks. Come on Kohler, publicize this procedure.

I was not able to install Until, until I watched a video on YOUTUBE.
I bought the part for my toilet tank. The water was constantly dripping. Whatever I did, I was not able to replace the part. I turned to YouTube and the suggested to remove the gasket flatten it between two boards with clamps, put it in the freezer overnight. Put the flatten gasket on the part and installed it in seconds. That process should be included in the install directions. Otherwise the part was great.

correct part
Very hard to install. Hard to compress new gasket. Had to us a thin pry bar and then twist it clockwise to seat. but it did stop the water seeping.

Works as expected - kinda hard to install
This is the second time I've had to replace this flush valve on my toilet. The gasket lasts about ten years, and the flapper lasts about five. I've found that the installation goes easier if I position the gasket on the inside of the flange first, then install the flush valve, and then finally manipulating the gasket to position it correctly.

Missing part and used
Received kohler flush kit. 3/4 days late. It came without gasket, Sent back to Amazon , Received replacement. Once again delayed from Amazon initial schedule date, This time the flush kit was used, plastic housing has dirt film, gasket was dirty. Also ordered a trip handle kit was missing washer and bracket Is this a Amazon problem or Kohler?

easy to install once ...
Initially tried to install it without following everyone's advise about how to do it. Once I gave up, I froze the gasket (compressed) as suggested by other reviewers and a youtube video. After a few hours, I tried it again. It installed easily.

I got K1078578 instead, strange, but they are exchangeable fortunately.
Is there anyone can explain the difference between Kohler 86972 and K1078578? I just found the different marks of water level, and weights?
