nice design but with fundamental design flaws
The media could not be loaded. I typically don't review a lot but after having spent so much time trying to find a pet fountain that meets our criteria, I decided to share the knowledge I acquired after reviewing almost all available fountain on amazon and ordering 4 different fountains. We were looking for a fountain for our soon-to-be bengal cat who tend to be attracted to moving/flowing water sources. We also have a dog and were hoping to find one that can be used by both animals. Our main criteria were: (1) no or minimal plastic as it is less hygienic, often questionable dishwasher safe, especially over time, tends to collect biofilm and there is always the concern for chemical leak with prolonged exposure, it tends to be less durable than stainless steal/ceramic. Some animals develop acne with plastic which we were wanting to avoid at all costs. Bottom line of my search re plastic: minimizing plastic is possible but there was always going to be some plastic parts involved, mostly the pump container, tubing and some filter holders. We ruled out all plastic water fountains from the beginning which is why I was very intrigued by these two options. (2) Noise level of both water splashing and the pump (3) Smart features and safety features: does the pump run 24/7 or does it have energy (and filter) saving modes/does it turn off automatically with low water levels. (4) Backup mode for power outages? (5) Ease of cleaning / assembly (6) Design and durability (7) Filter efficiency (8) Cost of replacement filters as well as footprint on the environment with waste production by the filter (7) Suitable for both cat and dog? Larger dogs tend to require access to the reservoir given the anatomy of the drinking process which is why this specific fountain was very appealing Re (1): Biggest plus: Given that the entire bowl is made of ceramic/stainless steal, there is minimal exposure to plastic, exception being the filter/pump housing and power cord. It is not clearly labeled as BPA/BPB free. One downside of the ceramic version is the fact that the power cord wiring is not separate from the water reservoir (see picture) and ends up running through the water quite a bit with a few sharp angles and kinks. Re (2): It is LOUD! One of the main reason why we ended up retuning both bowls was the annoying and loud hum produced by the pump. It was audible even from other areas of the house and an absolute no-no for us. The splashing sound was not bad with the water bowl being full but once about 1/2" inch was gone, it was very audible. In addition, due to the vibration of the pump, the stainless steel version vibrates and worsens the noise, especially with lower water levels (see videos). Our dog who LOVES water wouln't even come near it and she has used other fountains without issues before.... I wonder how disturbing the noise may have been to her... Re (3): No smart features to turn the pump off during certain hours or periodically throughout the day which is not energy efficient and runs the filter down faster. Being environmentally conscious, we prefer to save some energy and minimize the amount of filter changes/waste production. Re (4) There is no backup mode for power outages but given the open reservoir design, this wouldn't be an issue for this model as pets can always access water from the large side opening. Re (5) One would think with a two piece bowl, cleaning would be easy, however, I found it quite cumbersome as the cord had to be de-attached from the power adapter and then wired through the hole each and every time you take the pump apart to put the pieces into the dishwasher. More so the ceramic version as the cord hole is built into the reservoir instead of having a separate area (see pictures of other reviews). Once I filled up the ceramic bowl and forgot to wire the pump through and then had to empty it out again as the cord comes out from underneath and can't be wired once it's already filled with water. The stainless steal version is very prone to resistant water marks, I had to scrub off water spots after 1/2 day of testing. The pump cover itself has lots of little edges, angles and creases that over time I can see being difficult to maintain clean and didn't appeal to me. Re (6): In theory a nice resign that allows both flowing water and access to the main reservoir. I am not sure how effective the filtering is though. All water that goes through the pump must pass though the tiny filter as it is enclosed within the pump housing, although the pump itself appeared very weak and was barely able to get the water to "sprinkle" up. (Re 7) The filter size is relatively small compared to the container volume. Other fountains seem to have much bigger filter surface area to water volume ratios. Aside from the noise, the major reason we decided not to keep either fountain was the design flaw of how the power cord has to take multiple sharp angles though the housing and in case of the ceramic version, also through the bowl itself before coming out. Over time, this just seems to be screaming for failure but this is just an assumption and I may be wrong. The ceramic fountain is sleek and good looking but definitely heavy. Some reviews had mentioned the ceramic version may leak because of the position of the cord opening. I found that even with a fully filled bowl, there's enough room for it to not flow over, provided that the bowl is filled on the ground and not carried while full (see picture). Lastly, replacement filters are relatively affordable but they do come assembled within the piece of plastic that cannot be removed and has to be thrown away each time. Not the most environmentally friendly setup, I wish there was a way to just replace the carbon bag instead of the entire plastic holder. One pro: the pump itself can be replaced separately in case of failure. Bottomline: Overall nice dog/cat open design, minimal plastic but it does come for the price of a loud pump and some design flaws and inconveniences. We decided to keep the Petkit ultraquiet cat/dog fountain in the end https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07X8MHYSS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which is also not perfect but definitely meets our personal needs a bit better based on the above mentioned criteria. I also tried the "Intelligent Ceramic Pets Water Dispenser" (Ceramic white/blue bowl with red fish design) and that one i didn't even attempt to fill with water as it had no effective filtering whatsoever. Hope this helps!

Inexpensive to see if cats will use a fountain. They do one took a while to get used to it.
Like most of these they make noise when a little low in water. To help with this I cut a little of the plastic so the water would dump in the bull before it gets to the side of it and not dump out when it is vary full. The charcoal filter is so small that water just goes around it. So I don't use it. A lot of the reviews talk about black mold in all brands of fountains. I don't think it's mold it's just charcoal from the filters.

over all happy
the pump is a little louder than would like and gets louder the more water they drink so have to stay on top of keeping it full. The cord to the pump is hard to fit in the plug area to feed but still happy for the price.

3 year retrospective review -- the good and the meh
I originally purchased this fountain in January 2017 and paid around what it's priced currently on Amazon ($47). The fountain was a complete hit with our cats, and I quickly learned that a biweekly cleaning routine was enough to keep the fountain working properly. All the parts aside from the pump get thrown in the dishwasher and come out clean. To clean the pump, I take it apart and gently scrub with warm soapy water and a toothbrush. I do this cleaning process every other week, or whenever there is food or dirt present in the water. The mfr. recommends changing the filter every 2-4 weeks, but based on my experience, I would say that with regular cleaning you can probably stretch the filter for a month and a half. SERVICE HISTORY: -The top part was dropped at some point so the tip broke off, but that has not affected the function of the fountain. -One of the suction cup feet on the bottom of the plastic pump/filter enclosure broke off. We super glued it to reattach to the enclosure and it's worked properly since. -The water pump went out after 2 1/2 years. It would intermittently stop working and make a horrific buzzing noise. I bought a new pump for $15 and have not had any issues since. -After 3 1/2 years, we began noticing a persistent leak. Thinking it was my cats playing with the water, or us overfilling it, I didn't think too much at first. However, upon further inspection, I came to find that somehow there was a leak in the cord riser (tube shaped part on the base). Tried using super glue to stop the leak but that only worked temporarily. Contacted Pioneer Pet direct and a customer rep quickly got back to me. They informed me that they can send me a new base for $15 + shipping. Hopefully this new base can give me many more solid years of use. SUMMARY: Considering my total investment into the fountain, my overall impression is mostly positive with some skepticism. This is probably not the right product for you if you aren't willing to take the pieces apart and clean them regularly. My approach is that this is more like an aquarium or water feature than a pet bowl. I don't know if I'd call it a bargain as you can fill a bowl with water and give that to your pets for $0, but if you're in the market for a fountain and willing to spend a bit of money, I would recommend this product as long as the buyer can commit to routine maintenance. PROS: My pets love it and drink more water because of it. The sound of the water running is nice. Cleaning isn't too bad. Assembly is mostly straightforward. The manufacturer offers the parts individually when they wear out. If you want to save some cash, off-brand replacement pumps and filters can be had for cheap. The pump uses very little power. CONS: The parts will more than likely wear out. Build quality is not the best. Cord riser is thin and could potentially develop leak issues. Routine cleaning/maintenance can feel like a chore. Can be finicky to seat the parts correctly. Overall cost may be more than most are willing to spend.

Cats give their paw of approval!
The media could not be loaded. EDIT: I have now deducted two stars (origianlly a five star review), due to faulty product. The one in the video zonked out after 6 months. Amazon sent replacement. Replacement was not as quiet as original (quite loud, to be honest). Then the replacement broke within a month! I have now ordered a small pump from China, to use in it, as the drinking fountain was really popular with the cats and dogs. Origial review below: ------------------------------------ Well... approved by two of the kitties anyway. :) And out of the feline gang, they were the two we got the fountain for (the two of them used to be obsessed with drinking of the sink). It's much bigger than anticipated (never took any notice of the size), but also looks smarter in real life than what it did on the product desciption. Seriously easy to get up and running - make sure the pump is placed in the correct location, place the white lid on top. Fill with water, then plug it in. Done! If no water is coming up on the top, remove the lid, and make sure the pump is hitting the lid where it's supposed to. The two cats that use it, both drink from the flowing water, and from the bottom pool. Both dogs also love it, and will happily drink from either the pool, or from the top. Nice and quiet too, just a relaxing sound of the water (normally I remove sound from videos, but left it here, so you can listen). As it goes empty, you will hear the pump, when it gets exposed, and no longer covered by water, but it's just to top it up. The fountain itself doesn't make any mess either - no water splashing anywhere as it's running, or the cats drinking from it... when it comes to the dogs however, that's a whole other story... as per usual they'll slurp like crazy, toungues flicking water, their whole faces getting covered, and water dripping all over the place. However, cannot blame that on the fountain, the dogs does exactly the same with their regular drinking bowls too. :)

Noisy, messy and burns out very quickly.
--edited to two stars - it lasted maybe six months before the motor wore out - I assumed it was because I had let the water run low too many times (it was in a conservatory so there was a lot of evaporation over the summer) so I went ahead and bought another one. That one lasted a few months before also dying and this time I was very particular in making sure it never ran low and it was no longer in the conservatory. It would get noiser and noiser until I found I had to turn it off to be able to hear the TV at a normal volume and its spluttering would scare my cats away from drinking from it and make a huge mess. In the end I just went to my local pet store and bought a totally different fountain from there and it already is much quieter, tidier and the cats prefer it but time will tell. -- original review: It makes some weird spluttering noises, even if it is full of water and there is a low somewhat annoying hum all the time but other than that it has been great! I kind of was expecting the noise as it is a motor and there is going to be times when the pump does something odd or sucks in some air somehow. My cats are using it, there is little-to-no splashing and the water still looks clean. The cable isn't massively long, but I have oddly placed sockets which exacerbate it a lot - if the socket was on the floor it wouldn't be as much of an issue (although obviously don't put this water fountain next to a plug! It was pretty easy to put together too so all in all i'm pretty happy with my purchase!

A good buy-in my opinon
Just set these up - (i psched one for dogs, one for cats as my pets like their own 'safe zones'). 2 motors provided for each unit... one for UK n 'a n other' for outside UK use, if u have an adapter then u get to keep one motor as a spare :)) Easy to follow instructions. Easy to take apart/put back together again. Simple construction aids ease of use. I easily changed over pump motor to UK one. Rinsed filter as instructed before use(to save any bits of black carbon laying in the bottom of the fountain). Put filter in position (with white side facing waterbowl, black side facing motor unit). Replaced lid and filled with water. Took a little moving about on the floor to get the best position to save any vibrating noises... and then all fine... Pets had no problem accepting items. Noise occurs if the fountain is not filled up to limit-including animals depleating water levels by drinking from fountain-so top up is required to combat any vibrating noise which might occur. Once this is sorted out... AND make sure the motor is suctioned to the base properly with its small suction pads(pads already in place)... there is v little noise. Early days but at this price(i noticed the price of the replacement filters has gone up from £2.99 per pack to £15.99 or thereabouts ... eeeeek! on Amazon.. but there are other outlets which offer these filters at the reasonable under £5.00 for 3 methinks) im happy with my purchase. I think additional motors can also be purchased on the alternative site where I found the filters at the more reasonable price. Amazon gave me the best price, at this time, on the units-happy to buy 2 units as other makes were more than the price of these two put together Instructions for cleaning/periodical change of filter are very clear. conclusion: =quiet device when set up properly and maintained with correct water level =take away other source of water and pets happy to use ... health benefits outweigh any change in routine to pets :)) will update if i find subsequent use impairs quality.

Do not under or over fill the bowl
This is a great water dispenser which my cats love but you have to be careful with how much water is in the bowl. Too little and the filter compartment isn't properly immersed and the motor burns out. This has happened to me once but a replacement motor was easy and cheap to get. Now I judge the level by noting if I can hear any motor hum along with the trickling water sound. If I can then there's not enough water in the bowl. On the other hand, if there's too much water the teardrop-shaped shoot allows it to spill over the edge onto the floor, which is messy and annoying because it happens gradually so you don't immediately notice. I also recommend dismantling the motor completely, down to the little magnetic paddle cylinder, and washing it out about once a month to stop it getting clogged up, especially if you have hard water. I believe by doing this my motors have lasted for years.

My cats love it and it's easy to clean
My cats absolutely love this. One is a former stray, she drinks a lot of water and often sits or lies by the water bowl as if she's afraid it will disappear. When I get a jug of water for myself she gets excited and I have to put some in her bowl, even if it is full. The capacity of this water fountain is great as I know she won't run out of water. She now proudly sits by her little waterfall and drinks from the bowl part, and my other cat likes the fountain. It is very subtle as far as fountains go, which suits both of my cats. I do have to keep the water level high or it gets really noisy, so my thirsty girl gets the excitement of me topping up with the jug every day! It's easy to clean and was a great purchase
