A review that may answer some questions
If you've read some of the reviews about this product, you probably came away a bit confused. I know I was. There were reviews that said it was cheap and didn't work to other comments that said it was a great product. So which ones were true, I thought. Only one way to find out; I purchased one. Here is what I found out. This review is for the 20-inch LED hood and are specific to this hood size. Bright lights -------------- As far as adequate lighting, there is more than enough to fill up a 10-gallon tank. I don't know why others have complained about the lack of lighting. I found it quite bright when compared to my old incandescent lights, and the slight falloff of brightness in the corners is just nitpicking, in my opinion. It is barely perceptible. Plants like it --------------- As far as being good for plants, the LED lamps are doing a fine job providing enough lighting for them to grow. None of them have died, and if anything, appear to be as healthy or better than with incandescent lighting. Cheap or not? ------------- Some reviews said the hood was cheaply made. On this point, this all depends on what you consider cheap. The hood itself is well made, but it isn't of the thickest plastic that I usually expect in aquarium hoods. The fit was just right, but the hood did not fit flush on top of the fish tank. I did a little adjustment with the clips that attached the light to the hood and it straightened out nicely. Filter panels -------------- The opening on the back of the hood, for hang on the back filters, measures about 6 and 7/8s inches. There was enough room for my filter plus a little space left over to place my aquarium heater next to it. For filters that are wider, you will need to cut or saw the plastic to make the openings wider for your use. If you've got an air stone at the back of the aquarium like I do, you'll see a significant amount of water splash onto the back of the hood. This didn't look too good for the light switch so all I did was to cut a piece of filter foam to cover the exposed hood area area. Problem solved. You can also cut a piece of stiff clear plastic from a package to do this as well. If you've got a water filter that splashes water upon its reentry into the aquarium, a similar solution will also fix this. LED protection --------------- There is a little plastic shield that covers the LED light, and I found that this completely shields the LED lights from any water that splashes onto this area. The light was securely snapped into place, and when the hood is opened, it does not fall out as others have indicated. But it will fall out if the hood is opened at a 90-degree angle. The hood can be propped up with a small spoon or fork if you need to clean or vacuum the tank, and it's really no big deal to lift the hood to feed your fish. It only takes a micro-calorie to do this. There is a little slide out door that you can remove to leave a little opening to feed your fish, but I have left it on to make the hood look more uniform. Clean and healthy design ------------------------- The main reason why I purchased this hood was because of two reasons. I suspected that my old incandescent hood was slowly leeching bad metals into the water because the metal parts were rusting from the moisture, and the excessive algae growing underneath the hood was really unsightly. The LED hood is free of metal parts, and it is healthier for my tropical fish. I also like the low profile design of the hood. It makes the tank look sleeker. Easy assembly; read the directions ----------------------------------- Setting up the hood on my fish tank took about a half an hour because I wanted to make sure I understood the directions on how to attach the hood clips at the back of the tank. You actually have to angle the clips down at a 45-degree angle and then lift up so the other side of the clip can attach underneath the aquarium frame. There are two sizes of clips so make sure you use the right ones. Once this is done, you have to apply pressure to the joints of the hood, on top of the clips, in order for the two to snap together. No a whole lot of force is needed, but you do have to angle your push so that it is directed exactly downward on the clips. The instructions saved me a lot of hassle, so you may want to read them carefully. One thing that should be noted is that the opening at the back of the hood, for a HOB (hang of back) filter is about 6.5 inches wide. If you place an aquarium heater in this space alongside the filter, you'll just have enough room for both. But if you have a larger HOB filter, you'll need to cut away some of the plastic to accommodate a wider filter. I used a Dremel-like tool to cut away the extra plastic and a Fluval C2 filter now fits nicely in this area. It's too bad the manufacture didn't allow for snap-off sections to make the filter opening larger. LED Performance ---------------- Switching over to LED from incandescent was a bit of a shock as the light spectrum of LEDs is definitely on the bluer side as opposed to incandescent bulbs which are more yellow. This lighting really makes everything pop in the fish tank, but since it is a bit weak on the red spectrum, reds and yellows don't come out as much. The blue moonlight feature is an extra bonus and I've watched my fish during the night under this lighting. They seem to like it, although I haven't left it on all night yet. After about a week of getting used to the LED lights, I prefer these over my old lights. Family members are envious of how the tank looks in comparison with their regular light bulb setups. They've noticed that the tank now looks very sharp and "professional," whatever that means, lol. You may not like the bluish-green tint of these lights, so take this into consideration if you are thinking about buying this unit. Conclusion ----------- This hood is a great bargain, and only time will tell if it is long lasting as well. But for what I paid for it, which is essentially the same price I would have had to pay for a similar incandescent set up with those horrific rusting metal parts, I would say that this LED hood is well worth it for the health of my fish and the overall look of the tank. Plus it uses less energy and puts out virtually no heat--a plus when the weather gets hot. This hood isn't perfect, but for what it does, it definitely is a good aquarium hood. This hood works for me, but YMMV. Just understand that this is a bargain hood, and don't expect $100 features from it. If you've got that down, you should be OK with it.

Good product, poor material
The good: -The price is great, the lights are bright, natural, and give a very clean look. The blue nightlights are awesome - I'm going to put my tank in my nursery now and use it as a nightlight for the babies room. My fish are less stressed and eating better, especially my more nocturnal fish as they can find their food more easily in a low-stress light at my night feeding. -Very low algae growth with LED as opposed to the florescent I had before. *For the price, it's a great hood/light combo, and I'm glad I bought it! The bad: - As others have said, the clips are terrible! It actually comes with extras, and it's a good thing since I broke two trying to install them. The material for the whole hood is very flimsy, thin plastic. It doesn't matter much, aside from the clips, but you can tell the quality difference between this and a hood costing twice as much - as is to be expected. - Also, when installing this, *Read The Instructions* and line up the clips the way they say to. If you don't get them in the perfect spot when you snap them on, good luck moving them and your hood won't sit right. *I would have been willing to pay more for the same hood made of better material. The clips are ridiculous - such a huge oversight on an otherwise very nice and economical item. The in-between: -I have this on a 29 high, and it's true that the top corners don't get as much light - but it doesn't bother me in the least and it's not a dramatic difference. Might bother some people, though. -When you open it, the whole thing comes up; there's no door for feeding. Again, this doesn't bother me, but if you don't have your tank backed up against a wall that you can lean the lid on this isn't the hood for you. Holding it up a crack isn't a big deal when feeding your fish, but cleaning your tank is a different story and I'm quite sure that without a wall to lean the hood on opening the hood all the way and draping it against the back of the tank would break the clips. -I have a Marineland Penguin Biowheel 200, a heater, undergravel, and bubbler and felt like there was plenty of room for my cords/tubes/filter. There's also another section that can be punched out, I think this could accommodate a Penguin 350/Whisper 60/comparable size filter without a problem with the other section out too. -I read a few reviews where people had issues with the individual LED's being broken when they got it. All of my LED's work and have been running strong since I bought the product about a month ago, no issues at all for me. I would guess that's more of an issue with the lack of packing material in the box - if your Fed-X guy is in a bad mood that day, you might end up with an issue. I wouldn't let it be a deciding factor on buying this, though - Amazon makes returns easy and I think the chances are low of it arriving damaged. -If you have fish that are jumpers, I would really recommend this hood! More of it is sealed off then on a normal hood, and a fish jumping into it isn't likely to flip up the lid and end up on the floor. The only thing with that is during cleaning/feedings you have more top area exposed, but I think the trade off is worth it since you're right there in those circumstances and that's better then walking in in the morning and finding your fish on the floor after a midnight escape. -Less evaporation by far with this hood due to the lower operating temps of LED bulbs and having the hood cover more of the tank. -One other neat note - the night light acts like a blacklight, illuminating glow in the dark decorations. A very cool, and unexpected, feature that is especially great for a kids fishtank! All in all, I'm happy with this hood/light, and if I needed new hoods for another freshwater tank on a budget I'd buy it again. For the price, you really can't beat this, and the minor inconveniences are made up for by the quality of the light and the novelty of the night light. If you can afford T-5s, you might want to consider something a little more high-end; but if this is your price range, this hood can't be beat. UPDATE- about seven months after purchasing this hood, all of my blue lights burnt out. I was very disappointed! However, I called Tetracare (the number is on the box, which I saved) and after a short hold time of just a few minutes was transferred to a live person. I told her the issue, she took my information and said they would mail out a new light bar right away - I should have it in 7-10 days. So although I'm disappointed that the quality was so low, I am Very impressed with the customer service and the ease of getting a free replacement part.

Flimsy, poorly designed junk
I've been keeping fish for about 50 years. This is the absolute worst tank lid I've ever seen! The design is terrible. It has two hinges which are supposed to attach the lid to the back rim of your tank. Those hinges are meant to be permanent. So in order to feed your fish or service the tank, you have to swing the entire lid up like a coffin, only to be totally blinded by the LED light underneath. Then there's nothing to hold the lid open unless you have a wall behind the tank, so changing tank water (especially with a bucket) or cleaning inside the tank is a nightmare with a lid flopping down in your face. When you lower the lid it never sits properly on the tank rim and you have to wiggle it around. You can't take the lid off the tank because the flimsy, cheap plastic hinges break off. And the entire lid is so flimsy that it takes very little pressure to crack it. If you have cats who walk on tank lids, this is NOT the lid for you! Speaking of nightmares, setting up and installing this lid definitely qualifies. They expect you to "snap" everything together, "snap" the hinges on the rim of your tank, "snap" the hinge into the hood, then "snap" the LED light into the middle of the lid. Except "snap" means "break" because the plastic is so flimsy and brittle. In the end I had two broken hinges, and a big crack in the top of the lid while trying unsuccessfully to "snap" the LED light into slots that don't line up with the tabs on the light. They do provide two extra hinges, so obviously they know that their crap hinges will break. When I replaced one of the broken hinges, the replacement promptly broke when I tried to "snap" it onto the lid. I'm now using duct tape to replace that hinge and cover the crack in the lid. They only provide one opening to place filters, tubes or heater wires, and it's located on one side of the hood, not the middle. Their LED light cord sticks out on the opposite side. This means that if your equipment and electrical wiring is on the opposite side to the openings and LED cable, you end up with an electrical wire strung across the water in your tank. If you have a canister filter like mine which requires a hose inlet and outlet placed at opposite ends of the tank, you're out of luck. The only way to make more holes would be to use a Dremel or a hole saw, and that would break the cheap plastic. The LED light itself is miniscule and not long or bright enough for the tank size. Now my tank has a small bright area in the middle which looks dumb and doesn't provide enough light for plants. The sides of the tank are dark. To top everything off, this lid has an ugly looking grey toggle switch on the top of it, for the light. Obviously I recommend you don't waste your money on this overpriced, poor quality lid. I'll be returning this item as soon as I find a decent hood to replace it.

It was too small
Horrible I was struggling so hard to fix it I was waiting for this as well. Wasted so much of my time and money. Your measurements written are false. As you can see on the picture it’s smaller than advertised

Cannot fit
They said it matches with any aquarium of this length. Impossible to adjust it. So I am not satisfied.
