Plastic parts with limited lifespan
Low points for durability. I bought this mower in 2018. The body and many of the parts are made of plastic which, given that mowers spend a lot of time outdoors in the sun, degrades quickly. The orange body has faded to a light pink color. Worst of all, the handle has become floppy. Pressing down on the handle to lift the mower over high grass or obstacles is a common thing. Now the handle sags about a foot lower than where it should be. It still works, but I have to stoop over so much while mowing that my lower back aches. I took it apart to figure out why. B&D sells replacement parts (that's the good news). In this case though, new parts won't solve the problem. There's a two-piece geared mechanism that allows you to adjust the height of the handle. What has failed is inside, where those geared parts are bolted to the body of the mower. The plastic tabs which should lock the handle in place have worn down and partially peeled off (see photos), and that's why the handle droops. I tried fixing it with some butyl tape, which lasted all of five minutes. I've been able to sharpen blades, buy spare batteries, fix broken parts, and keep this mower going far longer than it was designed to last. Planned obsolescence. When I do finally replace it, I'll buy something more durable.

Loved my old one, love this one even more.
I have an old black and decker mower, the 27 volt rechargeable. I have had it for a lot of years (way over 15, closer to 18) and have abused the heck out of the thing. It lived outside for 9 years, always took a charge, and always worked great. I could mulch, mow, anything I needed it to do. Fast forward to today, the mower doesn't quite take a charge like it used to, but boy did it have a great run. Because of that, I decided I would go ahead and buy the same kind of mower, and I am not disappointed. I didn't want to deal with cords and outlets, and I didn't want to deal with gas and oil. I chose to get this one on Amazon because it comes with two batteries and the charger (the local stores are selling the mower only, no batteries or charger for at least 100 dollars more). My old mower was a 19 inch, this one is a 16 inch. I thought it might be an issue, but it is not. Gets into smaller spaces and is easier to turn. The extra power of the 40 volts is worth it. I just finished a job where I did a very large, wet, overgrown lawn and this mower handled it on the included two battery packs without any issue at all. Went over pine cones and branches without issue. Bagged up the grass without a problem. The best part though is moving the thing from place to place. The handle collapses over the top of the mower, and the mower has a carry handle on top. Being under 40 pounds, it was not difficult for me to pick up the mower and put it in the back seat of my car, and then take it to a friends to mow their lawn for them, something I could not do with the old mower. Also, the batteries charge pretty quickly. The old mower was a trickle charger and took about 4 hours to fully charge. The new batteries take a little over an hour, upward of two. Plus, they have a power indicator on them so you can tell how much power is left. I like that the batteries are removeable as opposed to the on-board ones in my old mower (you had to pull the entire mower to the charging area on the old one). There aren't any crazy rules and regulations about charging these batteries at a certain point, like only letting them charge to 90% or not depleting the battery completely, etc., like some of the other rechargeable mowers. Charge them at any time at all, leave them parked on the charger, no matter. It is not self propelled, but the mower is not difficult to push at all. One lever raises and lowers the mower easily and has six height settings. The mower is pretty quiet, my neighbors didn't even realize I was out their mowing. Easy to start. Amazon delivered it within two days, which is also a bonus. Best part is no gas, no oil, and I plan to use a solar charger in the future to charge them. The yard that I took care of today was about 8,000 SF, so if you have a much larger yard, you might have to toggle the charging of the batteries to complete it, but as I said before, the yard I did today was wet and overgrown, so potentially the batteries would last much longer the next time around. It doesn't cost much more than a gas mower does and the idea of not having to pay for gas and oil is a definite bonus.

Good for a small, weedy, hilly yard.
This works well for my small, weedy, hilly yard. I have had this for at least 6 full summers now. The good: I'm not the most conscientious mower of my lawn. It's a clearing in a wooded area, not particularly visible to neighbors, in a rural community with no covenants about grass length, so I don't always feel a great obligation to do anything about the lawn until it starts to get so deep that the cat gets lost. This mower is fine with that - as long as the length is set at one of the highest grass length settings it will plow right on through any sort of thick grass and weeds - even blackberry bushes (don't worry, I always send a search party for the cat and put him inside first). It doesn't get caught up on much of anything. It has accidentally hit both a large rock and a half-buried brick and did not suffer any damage (not that I'd recommend trying to mow over such things with any mower - I was probably just lucky that it didn't break the blade.) It's easily maneuverable around my hilly yard, and so light that I can carry it up the stairs to keep it on the porch. The bag is very easy to get on and off, and to empty - it has a big handle and you just open the plastic flap and lift it right off. The mower also works without the bag if you want the clippings to land on the lawn, though it isn't specifically designed to be used that way and occasionally when doing that in long grass the chute will get packed too full, and then the grass clumps need to be unstuck with a stick. I haven't had any problems at all with the handle loosening or breaking, even with my probably-inadvisable habit of picking it up by the handle to carry it up the porch stairs - though the handle is the hardest part of this to assemble correctly in the first place because of a rather weird gear and lever system. The batteries have green indicators to show you how fully charged they are, and the charger has lights to indicate what it's doing (waiting for the batteries to cool down, charging, done charging.) This mower wasn't too difficult to assemble by one person, even though the instructions had a lot of steps and probably took half an hour. The not-as-good: The batteries seem to last about 15 to 20 minutes each. My yard is too big (approximately 1/4 acre of open grass) to do the whole thing with one battery. Usually I can do it in two batteries, so I try to plan it so that I've got one fully charged and another fully or mostly charged when I start. But if I forget to charge both ahead of time, or if for some reason I can't finish the whole yard with two batteries, then I have to take a long break, because the batteries need to cool down before they'll even start to charge. The cool down seems to take anywhere from 10 minutes to more than half an hour, depending on how hot the weather is and how long the mower has been running. Then the charging of the battery to full power takes perhaps 90 minutes. If you don't want to have to plan or take breaks you might get annoyed with this. I had hoped the batteries would be the same type as those in my Black & Decker weed whacker - then I would have had twice as many compatible batteries and chargers - but alas they are not the same size, so not interchangeable. It would be nice if the company could standardize that for more of its gadgets. This needs its orange plastic key to be plugged into it in order to start, so you have to not lose the key! That is a good safety feature, especially for those with small children around, because really this thing is easy enough to figure out and light enough for a kindergartner to operate - but obviously that would be dangerous! I don't have kids and I'm a little afraid of misplacing the key, so I never take the key out of the mower, which defeats the purpose of the key. In the spring when I get the mower out of my shed for the first mowing of the year it usually doesn't start on the first press of the button - but just as I'm starting to get worried and think it's finally given up, it starts on the 4th or 5th try - and then it's fine for the rest of the summer. This mower is small and toy-like. That has its advantages as noted above, but it also means it takes a lot of passes to do the whole yard because the mower is so narrow. This is working well for me and I would recommend it, with the caveats above.

Here's a honest review putting this mower to task
Everyone, like me, wants to know, should I buy a 40v mower to replace my tired gas mower. I received this unit today and I put it to a serious challenge. I tested its limits. Here are the results for everyone on the fence. I set the mower to 4 resulting in about 2-3" of dense lawn mowing. Something that even my gas 6.5hp craftsman would choke on from time to time. My results : Cons : -I mulch, not bag. This mower is not great at mulching, especially when you're cutting off 2+“. It will bog down in dense grass. -it will stall if your taking off more than 3"at a time Pros : -It is so light and quiet that it feels like a toy. I was really hesitant to get a mower without auto drive. This is not an issue. This thing feels like I'm vacuuming the carpet with a Tonka toy. I was easily able to pick this up to move up some steps with one hand. -For the first time ever, I got my wife to more the lawn. Enough said. -Battery life is pretty good considering the challenge I put this through. See the photos. I was able to cut a substantial amount of dense grass (~3000sqft) on one and 1/4 batteries. -It's quieter than my steam mop. I could literally mow my lawn at 3am and no one would know. -Did I mention it feels like a Tonka Toy? Also, as usual, ignore the 1 and most of the 2 star reviews for this. These were all issues that could have easily been resolved either through Amazon or Black and Decker. B&D gives excellent product support. I bought a 40v hedger a couple of weeks ago with a faulty battery and they sent me a new battery asap. People that are complaining about battery life just set their expectations too high. No battery lawnmower, regardless of brand is going to cut a horse pasture.

Lawnmower not powerful enough.
When I first got this lawnmower it was fall so I didn't need to use it for a few months and when I started to use it when I reduced it to level 3 it would constantly stop while mowing. I just thought the grass was wet and hard to mow and when it was dry I had raised the level to 6 and it cut ok for the summer. But now that it is fall and I wanted to cut the grass shorter the machine stall whenever I try to reduce to level 3, not a chance to go lower. This machine does not have the power to cut my grass, period. I believe I should be offered another in it's place or at least my money back! 3 years after buying this lawnmower it has become almost useless ! It will only cut the grass if left in position 6, the highest cut, any lower and the mower stalls. It is just not powerful enough ! It was always bad but now is much worse ! When I contacted Amazon about this, they first gave me the phone number for Black and Decker but when I contacted them they were american and referred me to the nearest repair shop to my area but it was more then an hour away. When I told Amazon this they were very generous to offer me either a replacement, a complete refund, or money towards repairs. It was my choice. This was a very generous offer and I want to thank them for replacing my mower with a brand new one at no cost to me. The new mower works much better and I am a happy customer who will shop on Amazon more often. Thank you very much Amazon !

Whatever this is, it is NOT a Black & Decker CM1640
While trying to assemble it, I noticed one of the levers that hold the handle didn't fit. Fine, these things happen, I determined it was easier to order a replacement for this part than returning the whole thing. When I went to the Black&Decker/DeWalt service center to pick it up, I noticed the part wasn't the same as the one I needed and wouldn't fit either. Then the rep pointed out that the one I had was bright red (like Craftsman tools), whereas Black & Decker part are usually darker orange. The rep was very helpful, we looked at the plans and the parts lists, but nowhere could we find the part I was looking for. We don't know if I received a rebranded Craftsman mower or a fake knock-off. It's been over 30 days now so Amazon won't let me return it, so I'm stuck with a 400$ doorstop I can't use because of a stupid 3$ lever that doesn't exist. You might get lucky and get one that works out of the box, but don't expect any after-sale support.

Another great B&D tool.
Replaced a B&D corded mower that is still going strong after 28 years. Purchased replacement as new yard so oddly shaped that battery mower was needed. Larger wheels reduce scalping on uneven surface. Quiet yet enough power to cleanly cut regular grass. One fully charged battery will cut standard city lot. Advertised as having side discharge capability - it doesn’t (bag or mulch only). Easy height adjustment as well as simple handle breakdown for compact storage.
