Definitely worth paying a little extra!

I hadn't heard of Baldwin before a trip to my local Home Depot. They've been around for while and traditionally make high end door hardware. By high end I'm talking three to four digits high end. I believe you can even design custom knobs should you desire. What drew me to these levers over the old standard is the (and I didn't know this before looking into Baldwin more closely) use of the "Estate Latch" which only requires 28 degrees of movement to open retract the latch. Great if you are older and find using standard levers difficult. An additional note is the weight of these levers. You're getting some serious hardware. I've replaced knobs and levers in the past, but they all weighed nearly nothing in comparison to these units. The first unit I purchased ended up having a mechanical problem. I highly recommend, though it may have been a fluke, checking the latch to verify it will retract flush to the plate. A tip when installing the lever is when installing the internal half of the unit to be aware of the position of the lock. The first one I installed end up shooting the lock out, but thankfully no damage was done as all I had to do was slide it in and turn it so it lined up with the internal mechanism. I really like these levers. I'm not sure if Kwikset bought Baldwin, but Baldwin uses Kwikset's SmartKey for lock re-keying. I plan on buying Baldwin for all of my future door hardware needs. Looks great, tricky install

Be sure to fully tighten both set screws that mount the levers to the mechanism before attempting to engage the lock. Recently, my thumb-lock button (at interior side) stopped rotating. By re-tightening the exterior set screw the problem was solved. Just remember that the set screw on the outside is set deep within the handle, so you will need to extend the allen wrench fully into the mechanism to engage it.

Long Lasting Finish - Strong Thief Resistantance

Everything Baldwin is pretty top notch IMHO, this item is no exception. For 10 years now I have 14 of these lock-sets around my house, three of which are super close to my pool. If you didn't know, being close to a pool sets you up for corrosion problems. The finish stands up to that harsh environment perfectly. It gets some corrosion/oxidation deposits when close to the pool but they come off easily. I'm not into cleaning so I let it go for a long time and have no problems making them look brand new after a quick cleaning. I I have tried a different cheaper lock set and the finish couldn't handle the salt/chlorine environment. If you are looking for a secure and permanent lock set solution, this is the ticket. Another benefit from Baldwin is that this model is the same exact lock set I bought 10 years ago. Some companies can't wait for their product to fail so you buy a new model or end up replacing them all so they match the new design. Not Baldwin. I needed one replacement after an attempted break in that this lock stopped. Thief drove a screwdriver into the key opening but lock still did it's job. The noise from the banging he was forced to do set off the alarm. Only his laundry man knows how scared he was.

Nice door knobs but challenging to install

It took 2 shipments because Amazon loss control felt it necessary to restock a returned item. As for the 2nd it was fine. For the DIYer not experienced with lever systems, the outside handle is tightened from the opposite side. There is a reason the Allen key doesn’t fit the set screw. To be clear insert the Allen key through the inside hole to access the Allen head. Enjoy your new handle. Larry H

Solid Comfortale Handles

The Baldwin Prestige Tobin levers are a bit bigger than some levers - so they might look best on the main floor. The built solid and the design is very comfortable on the hands. The passage/privacy levers are reversible - except for the dummy handles - you need either a RT of LT. The only downside one this lever series is the Kwikset-style twist lock. The Schlage-style push/pop locks are easier to use - especially as you get older. I think you have to step up to the Baldwin Reserve Curve series levers for the Schlage design.
