New style for the classic

Great watch, ok straps

Great fit and finish and with a unique look vs so many watches out there. The included nylon strap is gimmicky, but not for every day. The included leather strap is a bit stiff and due to the padding ends up looking too narrow in my opinion. Great if you like a big chunky watch and are open to experimenting with straps.

Beautiful Bulova timepiece!

Wonderful NASA history on this Bulova timepiece. I purchased the 'bead blasted' version of this, and it came with all manuals, history card, etc. The watch came with a faux carbon fiber embossed leather strap and a 2-piece NATO 'type' strap. I ended up getting a Forstner Komfit for it just to add more NASA nostalgia. The watch keeps amazing time, hasn't +/- a second in 10-days. These can come from different stores, my was purchased from AreaTrend based out of Ohio. They had great customer service!

The moon watch that doesn't have an astronomical price tag to match.

It's hard to imagine a better deal than that offered by Bulova for this watch. Often what sets a watch apart from countless other similar watches is the "story" behind the watch. Whether it's the Rolex worn by Sean Connery, the Tag Heuer worn by Steve McQueen, or the Cartier worn by JFK. The most sought after watches have a story. Indeed, one of the most sought after watches is an Omega Speedmaster Professional. This is the watch worn by the American Astronauts for the Gemini, Apollo and Skylab missions, and until recently, were the only watches ever to make it to the moon. However, owning a "speedy" will set you back several thousand dollars, but that's what you need to spend to get a "moon watch". Up until now. The story goes that David Scott, commander of Apollo 15 was given a Bulova prototype to "test" while on mission. While he did not plan on actually "testing" the watch, he did put it in with the rest of his stuff as backup. As luck would have it, it was needed as his Speedmaster failed when the crystal popped out, and Scott wore the Bulova on the moon for EVA 3 and on the return trip. That watch recently sold for 1.6 MILLION dollars in auction and is the only privately owned watch that has been on the moon. Bulova has taken that story and created an homage to that prototype. The Lunar Pilot is the result. Even without the space pedigree, this is one special watch. It's quartz movement beats at 8 times the normal frequency giving the watch an accuracy of approximately 10 to 15 seconds a YEAR vice the normal 10 to 15 second a month variance on normal quartz watches. This movement also features a second hand that ticks every half second and a sweeping chronograph hand that is normally found only on mechanical watches. Encased in it's bead blasted stainless steel case, the watch is 45mm wide which makes it a large watch. The watch is capped by a thick sapphire crystal, and the back is engraved with the mission information from the Apollo mission. The face detail is exquisite. Instead of a "flat face" like on many watches, the seconds marker track is recessed, and the face is raised. The 5 min lume markers are raised further on the base and the subdials are slightly recessed into the dial. This type of detail is rarely found on a watch of this price point. A date window between the 4 and 5 position discreetly gives the day of the month. The subdial at 3 o'clock is used for measuring 1/20th seconds in chronograph mode while the 9 o'clock subdial shows minutes elapsed. The 6 o'clock subdial shows running seconds for timekeeping and remains moving whether or not the chronograph is in operation or not. The watch is very clean and legible as would be expected for a watch designed for space travel. In fact the face is much like an Omega Speedmaster, not due to any copyright infringement, but rather due to the necessity of maintaining the NASA specifications already laid forward. The case design, however is very distinctive with recessed pusher bars that pivot for the chronograph functions. It's easy to see that these pusher bars were designed specifically to be operated by a large gloved hand. The watch itself is water resistant to 50 meters, but really isn't designed for water sports. This version of the watch comes with two straps, a leather strap and a fabric strap that is reminiscent of the NASA strap used by the astronauts. A strap removal tool is also included along with a certificate of authenticity and booklet describing the history of the watch. This watch also comes with a stainless steel bracelet version, but they are not interchangeable as the lug holes are in different locations for both watches. Even without it's interesting inspiration, this watch would be a bargain. The accuracy of 10 sec a year makes this one of the most accurate watches you can reasonably own. The attention to detail of this watch rivals that of much more expensive watches. The fact that it comes with such an interesting back story makes it a must for anyone who values unique and collectible time pieces. And you don't have to plop down several thousand dollars to do so.

Great watch during the day

This is a great alternative compared to a several thousand dollar speedy. The lume pic is after 30 minutes of being charged but 30 minutes in the dark directly after that the lume was so dim it wouldn't show up on camera. Even at this price point the lume should last longer than that.

The "Other" Moon Watch, Bulova's Lunar Pilot

This watch has been reviewed on Amazon many times already, so I will try to not repeat too much of what has already been said, and if I do repeat, I'll try to condense my words to what you might really be interested to know. First: This watch has some historical significance, as a replica of the only other watch known to be worn on the Moon besides the Omega Speedmaster (which I also once owned). Bulova produced just a few of these back in the early 70's (through their Swiss subsidiary Universal Geneve), submitted some to NASA for testing, and gifted one to David Scott, who took it along as "backup" during the Apollo 15 mission. He ended up wearing it on the lunar surface while piloting the Lunar Rover. That particular watch sold at auction in 2015 for $1,600,000. Second: Even without the historical significance, it's a technically interesting watch with unique features. The watch uses Bulova's UHF quartz movement, in which the crystal vibrates 8 times faster than conventional quartz watches. This provides extreme accuracy of approximately 10 seconds/year as well as very smooth motion of the central chronograph seconds hand. The running seconds hand located on the subdial at six o'clock ticks every half-second, not every second like most quartz watches. Third: The styling is unique among modern Bulova watches, which are often very highly polished, glittery and sometimes "blingy". This watch is more of a "tool" or instrument, with a mostly bead blasted texture, and a little bit of a brushed finish on the bezel. The crystal is a thick flat slab of sapphire, and actually protrudes a millimeter or so above the edge of the bezel, just like the original plexiglass crystal did. The pushers to activate the chronograph functions are levers which operate in slots milled in the case. The dial is very precisely detailed, and has the subdials and the track for seconds recessed slightly below the level of the main dial, while the tachymeter track is raised above the main dial, giving a pleasing three-dimensional effect. The white lumed hands and markers offer high contrast with the black dial, and very good legibility. Basically, the watch looks like something designed to do a particular job, rather than something designed simply to look pretty. Fourth: The watch is physically large. The original was 43.3 mm diameter, and because the UHF movement used requires slightly more space, the case has been slightly enlarged to 45 mm, with an overall length of 53 from lug-to-lug and about 13 mm thickness. For most people, this isn't really a problem as large watches are fashionable, and it's not stupidly large like some other examples I could name. My wrists are almost exactly 7 inches, and I already owned other watches with similar size, so from my perspective it looks large, but not TOO large. If your wrists are less than 7 inches circumference, the watch MAY look big on you, depending on your personal preferences. Fifth: The build quality is excellent. I could find no defects at all, everything worked properly out of the box. I've heard of some buyers needing to reset the chronograph hands to zero (an easy adjustment), mine were fine from the start. The back is nicely detailed with information about the Apollo 15 mission and the famous Bulova tuning fork logo. The presentation box includes an extra velcro strap similar to those actually used by NASA, as well as a tool to remove the spring bars when changing straps. The leather strap which is attached to the watch is very nice, with a texture which resembles either carbon fiber or a basketweave (take your pick). Either way, it is kind of stiff to begin with, but in a day or so, conforms very well to my wrist. I find it comfortable enough to wear while sleeping, and although the watch is somewhat heavy, after a while it is easy to forget I'm wearing it. I wouldn't choose this watch to wear during very active sports such as mountain biking, as the weight on my wrist might be noticeable then. Also, I've got other watches which are lighter and better suited for that kind of use. However, for everyday wear, the Lunar Pilot is perfectly comfortable. Bottom line (see what I did there?) is that this watch is unique, comfortable, accurate and historically significant, and a LOT of watch for the money.

Excelente Cronógrafo en todos los Sentidos

Interesante la historia sobre los 2 relojes que estuvieron en la Luna: El Omega Speedmaster con movimiento mecánico de carga manual 321, propiedad del Gobierno de los Estados Unidos (NASA) y el Cronógrafo Bulova Referencia 88510/01 con movimiento Valjoux 72 de Dave Scott, comandante y piloto en la Misión Apollo 15. Este Bulova es una re-edición del usado por Dave Scott. Como tal, no pretende ser un “clon” del Bulova 88510/01 que estuvo en la Luna, sino una versión práctica y actualizada del mismo. Por ello, estoy plenamente satisfecho con mi Bulova 96B251 que tiene impreso el logo de Bulova actual y su movimiento de cuarzo de alto rendimiento de 262kHz. Bulova ha estado my acertada en este respecto. Pues por mucho que admire los relojes mecánicos como obra de arte, (cosa que prefiero ver en un museo antes que en mi muñeca a riesgo de sufrir un atraco), a la hora de la verdad yo prefiero un reloj que sea práctico. Lo cierto es que este Bulova cumple más allá de lo prometido ya que posee una elegante estética de cronógrafo vintage de aviador que recuerda a un vintage Hamilton, IWC o Sinn. No es acertado decir que este Lunar Pilot copia el diseño del Speedmaster, las similitudes entre ambos se deben a requerimientos concretos de la NASA con respecto al diseño del dial que som comunes a ambos, pero con diferente implementación. Una diferencia importante y práctica en el Bulova es el taquímetro protegido bajo el cristal, mejor adaptado a condiciones lunares, donde el taquímetro del Speedmaster está expuesto y es propenso a sufrir rayazos. Otra diferencia está en los índices, claramente legibles en el Bulova debido a la forma diferente de los índices en las posiciones 3, 6, 9. Mientras que el Omega Speedmaster possee una estética "racing", (pues sabemos cómo les gustaban los coches deportivos y rápidos a los Astronautas del Programa Espacial Apollo) el Bulova Lunar Pilot tiene una estética puramente de aviación, con los subdiales bien separados entre sí y una carcasa similar a la de los cronógrafos Británicos de aviación asimétricos empleados por la RAF en los 1970s. Aunque a algunos “puristas” no les guste, yo prefiero la versión del Lunar Pilot con ventana de fecha. Los numerales de la fecha son perfectamente legibles y no “en baja resolución” como se ha mencionado. También prefiero tener la opción de ver 1/20 de segundo en vez de un totalizador de 12 horas. El cristal de zafiro elevado brilla con tonos azulados en sus bordes y da elegancia al reloj. El dial posee un relieve y unos detalles que normalmente se ven en cronógrafos mucho más caros. Una de las razones por la cual prefiero este Bulova de diario es su movimiento avanzado de cuarzo de alta frecuencia, el Calibre Precisionist NP20-Y0Z de 262kHz. Este movimiento en su día fué uno de los más precisos del mundo (en relojes de pulsera), sólo superado hoy día por el Calibre Citizen 0100 con una precisión de un segundo al año. Este Bulova, anda sobre los 10 segundos al año, lo cual lo hace comparable a un Breitling SuperQuartz pero a un precio 10 veces menor. El Calibre Precisionist NP20-Y0Z también posee otras ventajas estéticas: El segundero a las 6 se mueve con un patrón “Texas Two-Step”, 2 veces por segundo, lo cual hacer ver vivo el reloj en una forma única. El segundero central del cronógrafo, se mueve a 8 saltos por segundo o 28,800 bph, exactamente como un Rolex Calibre 3035. Es impresionante ver esto en un reloj de cuarzo. Ignore las opiniones negativas, las correas son excelentes y no huelen a químicos en absoluto. Puede adquirirlas por separado y no son baratas o mal fabricadas. La elegante correa de piel negra posee un patrón Tropic de tejido de cesta (que no fibra de carbono) que es popular en estos días, y es perfectamente acertado y apropiado en este Bulova pues ese patrón Tropic era muy popular en los relojes de la década de 1970. Esta correa hace ver premium el Bulova como si fuese un Cronógrafo vintage IWC o un Sinn, pero con una historia única y las ventajas del calibre avanzado de cuarzo anteriormente mencionado. La correa NASA de velcro incluída es muy cómoda y la he convertido en mi elección personal en uso informal, auque uso la de cuero con la hebilla grabada con el logo Bulova a menudo. Esta correa NASA de velcro está bien construida y tampoco es barata como podrá comprobar a la hora de adquirir un repuesto. El único punto negativo que le veía a este Bulova era el débil lume en índices y agujas principales, el cual al principio aparecía con baja intensidad. Sin embargo, a medida que he expuesto el reloj a a luz en días soleados, parece que el lume se ha “recargado” y ya tiene una intensidad decente, iluminándose en un atractivo tono azul, similar al Chromalight de Rolex pero en una tonalidad única y bien visible de noche. No es tan brillante como un Seiko Diver o un Citizen Promaster pero se ve mucho más elegante, sin “sobrecargas de luz” en el dial. Al ver el dial con índices y agujas iluminados en la oscuridad, no hay confusión posible al ver la hora, pues la aguja de las horas es más corta que los índices mientras que la aguja de los minutos es más larga que los índices. Así pues, no hay confusión entre las 10:10 y las 14:50 por ejemplo. Si te gustan los cronógrafos tipo aviador y el movimiento de aguja segundera en los automáticos pero prefieres las ventajas prácticas de un cuarzo, que además cuenta con una historia de fondo e importancia difícilmente igualada por otros relojes, no lo dudes, es una excente elección. Este reloj será un cuarzo, pero la vista y la sensación que dá es la de llevar un reloj automático pero sin ninguno de sus inconvenientes (imprecisión, servicio, etc..) Llegó 3 días antes de lo previsto bien embalado y con todos sus accesorios, certificados de autenticidad y garantía, libro histórico, manual y etiquetas protectoras, lo cual se agradece. 5 Estrellas a Bulova, a Amazon y al Vendedor!

Ha llegado muy bien embalado, hice el pedido el lunes dia 30 y aunque la fecha de entrega estaba estipulada entre el 11 y el 15 de diciembre me ha llegado hoy dia 5 por lo que a nivel de envio super satisfecho. Tengo un Omega Speedmaster Automatic Reduced y un Omega Speedmaster Profesional, este desde hace un año pero tengo que decir, salvando las distancias entre un reloj de casi 5.000€ y un reloj de menos de 500€, que el reloj es maravilloso, una pasada, muy bien acabado con unos materiales de primera calidad y puesto en la muñeca queda asombroso. Viene con su correa de cuero de buena calidad y la de nylon con velcro similar a la utilizada por los astronautas y con un parche con la inscripción de la fecha de la misión y las características del mecanismo de cuarzo de ultra alta frecuencia. La correa se puede ajustar de diferentes formas para que se ajuste a vuestra muñeca. El reloj no es pequeño pero se ajusta perfectamente y os digo que no tengo una muñeca muy grande. Viene con su tarjeta de autenticidad, su pequeño libreto explicando brevemente la historia del reloj y su herramienta para el cambio de correa. Lógicamente no podemos comparar la mecánica de un Speedmaster con la de un reloj de cuarzo ( aunque el cuarzo de este reloj no es cualquier cosa, es de lo mejor que podéis encontrar en cuanto a precisión y calidad ) a nivel de costes pero os garantizo que una vez puesto en la muñeca es algo en lo que no vais a pensar y no vais a querer quitároslo. Me estoy pensando llevar en la muñeca izquierda el Speedmaster y en la derecha el Lunar Pilot y disfrutarlos a la vez, je je. Calidad de materiales top, tanto la caja como el cristal de zafiro y la tapa trasera con su leyenda explicativa de cuando y donde fue utilizado por el comandante de la misión Apolo XV le da una vistosidad increíble. Resumiendo, la historia detrás del reloj hace que sea imprescindible para cualquier amante de las misiones espaciales Apolo. No os va a defraudar hacerme caso. 31/12/20 despues de casi un mes el reloj no ha adelantado ni atrasado ni un solo segundo. Un reloj impresionante. 19/9/22 en casi dos años ha atrasado 15 segundos. 16/2/23 aun no he tenido que cambiar la batería. Decían que duraba menos de 2 años pero en mi caso aun sigue funcionando.

Best sub 500 watch

When buying a watch i look for 4 different things: Price, Complexity, History, Aesthetics. This watch has all four:- Price- nowhere will you find a watch which does everything else so well for such a good price. Complexity- the high performance quartz movement is astounding, gaining/losing a couple seconds a year (my auto watches lose/gain more in half a day) History- the other moon watch, the fact that this alongside the omega speedmaster has been to the moon is enough reason to buy it. aesthetics- its a big watch, this was my biggest issue - i have a 6.75 inch wrist so i was worried 44mm would be too big though. it is large on the wrist however it is not as bad a s i thought it would be. i swapped the strap out for an aftermarket thinner strap and it hugs the wrist a lot better than the faux carbon fibre leather strap that comes with. A great buy!

I saw this watch and the story behind it on a video on Utube and went looking for one to add to my collection. I am not disappointed it came very well packaged and is presented really well highly recommend if looking for a smart unique dress style watch

2 great things and one not so great. Great points 1st of all - interesting movement with second hand that ticks twice per second and sweeping chronograph hand (on a quartz watch) Moon landing connection Not so great- Size - I knew from the online specs that it is relatively huge but hoped it would wear smaller - it didn't..
