Pretty darn good coal starter!

After reading some disgruntled reviews about how the metal turns different colors and that it's cheap metal from China, or the handles fall off right away I feared it might be money lost if I took the chance. Wrong! Yeah, some parts of the metal might change color a little bit due to the heat, but that's to be expected. Happens with all coal starters whether they be Weber or any other brand. Mine hasn't changed colors much since I started using it. But, who cares if it does?? What matters is whether or not it can light your charcoal. And, it does - fast! I don't normally light a full basket of coals (the basket space is big by the way, bigger than the Weber I have). I just do anywhere from 8 to 12 coals then pour them over my main coals once they've ashed over, which takes around 10-15 minutes with this thing. Speedy, which is great if you need to get your BBQ/Smoking situation going fast! The release door is the key point here with the Char-griller. Now I don't have to tilt and pour like I've had to with my Weber chimney. Instead it's just drop from the bottom. This is especially useful for people who cook on smoker barrels/ugly drum smokers. I've had it now for a few months, so far so good. No warping on any of the metal yet. Very good design. I'm probably going to buy a couple more as I need them. As long as you use them for what they're intended for they should last a long time.

Does the job

This works very well just wish it had a larger hole for using a match to light the charcoal but a drill bit does the job quick. Love the quick release so there is no spilling or heat near my hand.

Fire Ground

Probably the safest method I've found for lighting my coals as the bottom hatch drop is a much safer and more effective way of releasing the hot coals than turning over and dumping. So far the contraption seems to be holding up but I'll put it thru more rigorous testing this summer.

Great product. Where was this all my life?

I ordered the wrong size...so I thought at first. Now I'm glad I ordered the larger one. I can light my usual number of coals without having to load the chimney all the way to the top. That in turn keeps the sparks from flying quite as much. I recommend the larger size. The trap-door arrangement is great. I hated turning chimneys over to dump hot coals. Hats off for that design and also for the ample vertically placed vent holes along the side. My last chimney did not have those additional vents and it took much longer with that one to get the coals hot. I was surprised by how quickly they lit up with this new chimney. The handle is heat-resistant, but it gets warm enough that you'll probably want to wear a heat-resistant glove when it's time to pick up the chimney and pull the trapdoor release handle.

Works great for about a year

I've had 3 of these so far, they work great for about a year and a half of use and then the trap door mechanism deforms and eventually falls apart and no longer will hold the coals. I'd rather spend 2x and have the trap door last, but for the time it works, it works really well and is much more convenient than having to flip and dump out. I mostly use lump, which could accelerate the gradual degradation of the trap door as it burns hotter than briquettes. Still ordering another one as it's much more convenient than dumping.

Works well if you don't abuse it

Went from a Weber to this and am happy so far. I've used it a dozen times and it still works as expected. Does not seem as heavyweight as the Weber but the bottom drop trumps that shortcoming. I think that the issue with those having warping problems with the base is that they leave the coals in there too long until the whole thing glows red. It's not designed for that, your BBQ is...so dump it as soon as the flames are dancing atop the coals. Second photo is pretty much the limit of how hot you should let your starter get.

Good with coals not for lump...

The ifeal is good and it works ok with coals. But if you are using lump, it get squeeze in the macanism and can become dangerous. I highly recommand to use with heat resistant gloves... This way if it get stock, at least you can get the trap that hold the lump loose...

Es muy práctico

Es muy fácil de usar, puedes abrir la compuerta para dejar caer el carbón a la parrilla incluso sin usar un guante protector de calor debido a que no se calienta demasiado la agarradera, el tamaño de la carga para un weber master touch no es suficiente para llenar todo el asador, llena las dos canastillas que vienen con el asador para poder ubicar el carbón estrategicamente debajo de la parrilla

Es de buena calidad, la conseguí en buen precio. Esta reemplazo a una Weber que tenía. Es mucho mas practica y aparenta durar mucho. El gatillo para vaciar es una chulada
