Great bit for hard metals

I just had to drop a note to say how well this bit worked for me. I had a hardened steel shaft I was trying to cross drill that burned out or broke 3 HSS bits so I ordered this bit. Using my mini mill this bit went right through without any issues!

Like a Hot Knife Thru Butter in General, but Fluted Bit Broke Upon First Use

This #31 bit cut through a 1/2" diameter hardened steel shaft like a hot knife through butter. I tried a cobalt drill bit first, it would hardly make a dent. Update on the 769 Latrobe Fluted Bit, Size 15/64: I have many Chicago Latrobe drill bits, and except for this one, they are fantastic. I was drilling 1/8" thick Type 316 stainless steel with this 15/64" bit in my drill press, using Anchor Lube for lubricant. The flutes broke apart after approx 5 seconds of engagement. This type of stainless is very hard, and I needed to press down moderately hard with the drill press. My other Latrobe bits are spade and twist type, not fluted like this one. They hold up really well and stay sharp for a long time. Perhaps I was pressing too hard with this one, but I will stick with spade and twist type bits in the future.

Best bit ever!

This bit saved me from having to go to the machine shop. After reading reviews, I decided to purchase to drill out a broken off bolt for a valve cover on a classic car. No other bits would bite into whatever was broken off(not sure if someone broke off an extractor or ez out before I got to work on it.) this bit started to work right away, drilled through it in no time. Worth the money!!

will drill through work hardened metal. straight flutes are more shatter resistant than spiral flutes. clamp work for best results and use a mill or table drill. last resort, if you must use a hand drill set on lowest speed and set torque to slip if it grabs. carbide drills will shatter if work moves or shifts while drilling. these drills will hold an edge longer than hss or cobalt but break easier.

Worked when nothing else would

This is an amazing bit. Chewed right through exhaust bolts when NOTHING else would. I tried other carbide bits and they wouldn't even make a dent. This bit went right through. Don't forget to use some wd40 as not to overheat the bit and break it.
