Fixed the Problem
This was an inexpensive repair that totally fixed the issue of soap leaking down the pump and around the base.

Get the compatible Kohler pump for only $1.43
UPDATE: I ordered the Kohler pump Kohler 1041645 Soap and Lotion Dispenser Pump Assembly for $1.43 from Amazon, and it is compatible to the Grohe pump. I would not recommend the Grohe pump anymore. The Kohler appears to be of the same quality as the ELKAY Grohe. Since Amazon stocks this pump, you need to order over $25 of stocked items to get this. As much as I like Grohe's products and own them extensively, the soap dispenser is a flop, and requires a lot of maintenance, until it fails. The pump is poorly designed. The soap dispenser itself has this problem that the nozzle and connecting brass tube is too narrow. This means that if you don't use your dispenser frequently, the soap inside the nozzle and tube dries up, and you then need to use a stiff wire such as a paper clip to open it. I have solved this problem by drilling a hole at the end of the nozzle and enlarging the brass tube itself by drilling. But the pump is a disaster. It fails after a while, especially if left unused. I traced the problem to rust, which permeates the ball bearing and the seat, and hence the ball valve fails to operate. It either fails altogether, or it works but gradually the soap is lost, and then the pump stops working. One source of the rust is the ball bearing itself, which is supposed to be stainless steel. Obviously it is a cheap imitation ball, and you can see rust marks etched into the ball, when it is supposed to be perfect. There are other sources of rust, which I have not been able to determine. The rust causes the ball not to seat perfectly, and hence the pump loses soap and prime. Sometimes the pump works with plain water, but refuses to work with soap. Taking apart the pump and cleaning it out, works about half the time. Other times the pump fails for no apparent reason. In some dispensers it is impossible to separate the pump from the head brass nozzle, and the connection is just too tight. Out of 10 dispensers that have failed on me, I have been able to resurrect about 5 of them. The others I have bought new pumps from Amazon. To resurrect a pump, you need to open it up. To open the pump, you must cut an incision where the top of the pump mates with the body of the pump. The incision should cut both flanges and go down about 3/8", and just deep enough to cut the body plastic (and flange), but not deeper. Then you can pull the top part off the body and open it. Do not damage the body or the plunger in this process. Clean the ball and spring and the plastic seat (gently). I would not recommend the Grohe soap dispensers if they are not used frequently. As for this replacement pump, all that I have ordered have worked. Question is when will they fail, in particular if they are not used everyday. Note: if the soap is too thick, the pump will get clogged and will not work. Soap will dry up after a while and if the soap in the bottle is heavy, then replace the soap. The pumps seem to work better with less viscous soap, so add water to your soap.

Works perfectly - if your old one misbehaves, just replace it - tips for easy installation...
I have a Grohe model 28.832 soap dispenser from 1995. It hadn't pumped properly for over a year and finally croaked completely. To be sure I got the correct replacement part, I called Grohe, because their web site didn't show my old model. An email to them got no response, but the phone was answered after 5 or 6 minutes. The number is 1-800-444-7643. The representative had to look up the old model but quickly found it and told me this was the part. Once I had the new pump, I thought I'd see if I could clean out the old one after I pulled it out. Just an experiment. So, I pulled off the old tube, then wrapped a soft rubber glove around the pump body, clamped it in a vise and pulled the pump out. I had to pull quite hard because of the old soap and salt buildup. The inside of the chrome pump head needed a good cleanup with a tooth brush under hot water. It took several minutes to get it cleaned out. I also cleaned out the old pump and could hear and see that there was a ball bearing that acted as a valve. So I put the old pump back in and tried it but it still didn't work, so I advise that if you have pump problems, just buy a new one and throw the old one away. This also means you don't need to worry about crushing the old pump when you pull it out. Once the dispenser head is clean inside the new part pushes in easily. The washer goes over the pump and then the two pieces go in. Or you can separately put the washer in first and then the pump. It's trivial - really. The new one is amazing!!! I'd forgotten how well our dispenser used to work. The old pump worked for over 10 years so expect the new one will last that long. I might get a spare now in case the part is discontinued because a whole new dispenser would be expensive.

This repaces a pump I bought on Amazon in 2016 that never worked right
This repaces a pump I bought on Amazon in 2016 that never worked right from the beginning. I did not complain or return it, but I should have. I lived with it until I couldn't any more. The new one works fine so far.

Just what I needed
My original Grohe dispenser worked for about 10 years, and then failed. I bought a replacement dispenser, and it worked for a few days ( during which I threw away the container and my old metal top piece, so I couldn't return it ), but then the pump stopped working, and I had to pump 20-30 times before the soap came out. I did not want to go through the cost and expense of chaining the entire unit again, so I thought I would give this pump a try. It came after 1 day, although I have free 2 day shipping. It it very easy to use, and all you need are pliers to pull off the metal top piece and tube at the bottom. Everything snaps right back together, and the pump works perfectly, so far. If something changes, I will update this review.

Works as advertised
My old pump broke several years ago, didn't realize I could actually purchase a replacement for just this one part of the entire assembly. The fact that you can must mean that Grohe is aware of where the weak link is, and rather than improve the overall design to make it last longer, would rather sell you the same old thing each time. I would recommend the part specifically, but would not Grohe in general as their products are very expensive and are apparently not as high of quality as you would expect, for the price.

Replacement pump is perfect
Thanks to the posts here, I ordered the Grohe replacement pump, rather than a whole new unit, for my leaky pump. And I followed the posted instructions here (amazing that Grohe sends the part with no instructions at all!) so I pulled the old one out with pliers, forced the new one in - and I'm in business! Yeah - and thanks to those who provided the guidance!

Junk but no other solutions
Overpriced landfill garbage that breaks every 3-6 months. But I keep buying them to replace as they break. Planned obsolescence. Somebody has to make a better sink soap pump, right?

Simple and Cost Effective Replacement
I have a Grohe 28 857 SD0 In Sink Soap/Lotion Dispenser (Stainless Steel) that started leaking a few months ago. Found the replacement pump online. Ordering was easy, quick and arrived in less than a week. I was able to pull out the original without too much effort. The replacement pump fit perfectly and I had it installed and working in minutes. Managed to get over dozen years of regular use out of the old pump. Hoping to get the same out of the new.Grohe 45260800 Pump Only for Soap Dispensers
