Typical Intermatic- built like a truck and heavy-duty
It’s heavy- heavy enough that it was tricky holding on to it while installing on a concrete wall. Still, it will probably outlast a tornado, like Intermatic typically makes their enclosures. It’s a little buzzy, but so was the Hayward pool light transformer it replaced. Transformers always make a little noise and this one is probably medium-range as far as noise goes, based on the experience with the Hayward and my doorbell and irrigation system transformers. I expect it to last like an Intermatic and I could probably run a car over it without structural damage. I’m only slightly kidding on that.

Looks like it's fixed my pool light that's been intermitent for years!
I had what I thought was a strange problem with my pool light for several years. The light would come on and run for around half an hour without any trouble, it would then shut off for a few seconds and then come back on. It would continue this pattern until it eventually killed the bulb in about a week and a half. Through some research I found out it was likely shutting off because it was sensing an overload or more likely, an over-heat condition. I had an electrician come out for unrelated work and chatted with him about the pool light. He asked if there was water in the fixture and when I told him there wasn't, he immediately told me I needed a new transformer. He told me he could do it for about a hundred bucks + parts but told me if I was comfortable with basic wiring I shouldn't mind doing it myself. Through some additional research I'm seeing these transformers have a useful lifespan of about 7 years or so. My old one was around 15 years old. If you have a pool light that doesn't work, an old transformer, and the light doesn't have water in it, this transformer is a good first step in trouble shooting.. Wiring is fairly straight forward with one exception, and the exception is why this is 4 stars instead of 5. I'm going to simplify a little for the sake of brevity. The box has two wires for the high voltage side and two wires for the side going to the light. The high voltage side is a black and a white wire. Simple enough, black to black and white to white. On the low voltage side it has two identical black wires with identical white writing on them. My pool light has one black wire and one white wire. A voltmeter straightened out which was hot but it could've and should've been easier. Update: Still no issues after over a year of use

There is no substitute for Intermatic.
I can tell you for a fact that there may be substitutes for a Porsche, despite with Tom Cruise said, but there is no substitute for Intermatic. Simple solid, and reliable.

Great Transformer And A Breeze To Install.....
I had a low-voltage transformer die last summer after a lightning strike near my home and needed to replace it. I found this Intermatic model on Amazon and have been very pleased with it ever since. It provides 300 watts of power for my lighting and is totally weatherproof in its design. The transformer I replaced was enclosed in plastic and always had problems with ants and other bugs getting inside. This Intermatic version features a steel enclosure that seals tight against the elements and anything else trying to get in. One thing to note is that this is only the step-down transformer and it doesn't include a photocell or timer that other units provide. This worked well for me since I had a timer controlling the entire circuit. The other nice feature of this unit is the easy selection of output voltage. Inside the unit you have the choice of several output voltages that allows you to adjust for carious loads. For example, if you only have a few lights located near the unit being powered by the transformer you can select the standard 12v setting. If instead you have a lot of light or a longer cable run you can select a slightly higher voltage to make up for the drop in current of the larger load. The ensures that all the lights will be the same intensity along the string. Great product - Well built and a good value!

Tired of the buzzing?
The PX300 is a quality product and I have it running both my pool and walkway lights (all are 12Vac). What bothered me was the buzzing. The transformer was mounted with the pool equipment on the outside of our bedroom. The pool is off at night but not the lights. It was driving me nuts.. Solution: Replace the Intermatic "plate style" transformer with a more expensive toroidal transformer. It will cost you about $75 and you'll need to modify Intermatic's metal box to make it fit. The replacement is a Triad VPT12-20800 toroidal transformer (12Vac, 250W). I used a Dremel saw to lower the metal shelf support a half inch ... and I hold the toroidal transformer in place with well-placed tie straps. When I first turned it ON, I thought I had made a mistake somehow. It was stone quiet. No vibration. I checked the breaker ... it was ON. I then checked out the pool lights and walkway lights. They were ON! Well worth the effort ... if you have a quiet application. Do you need electrical skills: Yes. Do you should get a licensed electrician. The picture is after the mods. Note: I verified that the Triad unit is an "isolation" transformer... like the Intermatic. Plus, I made sure to keep Intermatic's built-in safety protection in the circuit.

I bought a pool and spa light 12v by mistake ...
I bought a pool and spa light 12v by mistake. Supposed to get the 120v lights. Did some research and found out this transformer convert 120v to 12v to use with pool lights. Also Found out that running 12v is safer for submersible light fixtures compare to the regular 120v. Now come the wiring part: The box comes with the wiring diagram. The left side of the transformer is the input side. Disregard the blue and yellow wires. Wire the 120v wires from your junction box (black and white) to the black and white input on the transformer. The output has two identical black wires. Connect the white wire from your pool or spa light to one of the black wire on the output side. Connect the black wire from the pool light or spa light to the other black wire. I got confusedwith the output wires on the transformer because they were both black but found out that it doesn't matter. But either one can serve as neutral or hot.
