Learning Resources Botley The Coding Robot 2.0 Activity Set

My 4-year old grandson and his father have fun playing with this together. It seems to be an educational toy as well since you have to estimate lengths and directions for it to go.

Awesome gift

Our youngest grandson asked for Botley as a Christmas present. All year long, when asked what he wanted it was always, Nammaw I want a Botley like at school!! So he got his wish, it is his favorite thing to play with!! I would highly recommend this as an educational gift for any child in k-3 grade!! The only downside is there aren't many accessories for it at this time.

Everyone loves this!

Bought for 4yo but every kid that encountered it wanted to play. If you plan to give to a younger kid, be sure to read the manual first. It is only instant play if you're in the right setting and can explain how it works.

Questionable quality for a claimed award-winning STEM education tool

The website description for this Botley 2.0 sounded great, "award-winner", "Amazon's choice", 4.6 out of 5 stars. So it felt like a no-brainer to buy one for a 5 year old. The first one arrived on time, and after being put together, Botley was responding to a simple program entered on the remote programmer (suggested on the user manual), so it looked promising, yet that's when it changed it character and stopped responding to subsequent coding. Even after turning off and turning back on both Botley and the programmer, Botley just decided to stop responding to the programmer. Feeling disappointed yet not wanting to give up, I returned it while put in an order for a new one. Amazon shipped and delivered it really fast, and the second one seemed to be behaving a bit better than the first one in that Botley seemed to respond to the remote programmer more than just once, but it was unpredictably random. So there is no way to know if Botley was going to respond or not. Well, I want to give it the benefit of the doubt thinking that maybe I wasn't using it correctly, and will wait until the coming week to contact the company directly for technical support to see what's really going in. But if Botley 2.0 and the remote programmer are struggling with communication between them when they are fresh out of the box, it is hard to see how they could last for a while. Maybe the award winner was not this 2.0, but just the earlier version of Botley? and the 2.0 has a lot more quality issue during manufacturing?

78 item set include following. 40 x direction cards (each having two symbols printed in both sides) 12 x cubes (orange, blue, light blue 4 each) 8 x sticks (orange blue 4 each) 2 x flags 2 x stick holders (cone shape) 6 x large cards (one side black and white, other side printed in color) 4 x Botley hands (orange and blue 2 each) 2 x Botley face mount (orange and blue) 1 x Botley him self 1 x remote 2 x balls (poly sphere blue, light blue) 1 x large circular goal (polygon cut out from middle blue) 1 x sticker card This product very innovative because it provide many playing options. For example, cubes sticks work as building blocks. those are specifically designed for Botley traveling length. So if you make maze out of these items it fit for botley size and commands. One down size is botly turn angles are exactly 90 or 45. This lead for errors when programming. However, this is a slight issue and does not bother kids. Its a point where the developers should work on to make perfect. I straight away started using rechargeable batteries. Because single used of batteries is a problem for disposal. I keep 6 AAA batteries for botley where it use 3. My charger need 2 or 4 batteries for a charge. I am satisfied with the build quality and way the product presented. I hope it will last few years and my kid will take the bast use. This is not a normal play toy so I wonder whether it can be gifted or not. For a kid around 5, it needs some guidance to start on. Parents should have a idea on what they are dealing with and what are the long term benefits to get some motivation.

Best gift ever for little kids

Our kid loves Botley and we then have bought it as a special present for friends' children. This was the party sensation! Functions are basic but a good starter to learn the basic logic of coding, and regardless of that it is a lot of fun! I would recommend it for kids as young as 3 or 4 yo.

Updated review! Received a replacement for the defective one.

Updated review: I bought this on prime day and saved it for the start of our school year. It was defective, but Amazon made it right which I hugely appreciate. THANKS AMAZON! The replacement works flawlessly and was received quickly. I never heard back from the Learning Resources company, which sours me a little. We are typically pleased with the brand, but it’s unfortunate they don’t stand behind their products. This is a great concept, but it doesn’t work. We received a defective one that only makes sounds but no movement. Tried to contact Learning Resources directly but haven’t received a reply. What a waste of money. 100% DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Also a Christmas gift

This is a Christmas gift for a grandchild. It’s pre-Christmas and gift was shipped across the Province to the child so this request for a review from me has been requested much too early. Maybe I’ll rethink my stance on giving reviews for my purchases.

I only bought these because they were like $3 on sale. My daughter loved dressing up Botley and its remote in new colours.

After two days so far so good

So far so good. After two days we are having great fun with Botley. It was a gift for my five year old grandson and he is learning some of the functions. We re particularly enjoying Botley when he becomes a police car, dinosaur, frog etc. He is needing a lot of supervision from us and although he can manage simple coding he needs help following the instruction booklet.
