One of our new, favorite camping accessories. Burn Time calculation in review
The media could not be loaded. CAMPFIRE RESTRICTIONS It has become a sad reality. California (and the west coast) has been hit with extreme drought and prolonged campfire restrictions due to the number of unfortunate, devastating wildfires that had been stretching the State’s firefighting resources thin. Our hearts go out to everyone affected! Last month saw something rightfully drastic that shocked our outdoor community: the US Forest Service shut down all CA USFS land for hiking, camping, and off-roading in its effort to prevent more wildfires! As outdoor enthusiasts, the realization that fires and resulting restrictions will not go away anytime soon had me finally look into propane fire pits as safer alternatives to wood/charcoal campfires. They do not produce runaway ember (that could spark a fire elsewhere) and do not cause damage to the ground underneath. That also resulted in learning about refillable propane tanks as cheaper and more environmentally-friendly fuel than those green 16oz/1lb Coleman Propane Canisters. Camping is just not the same without a campfire and most places in California do not restrict propane stoves or propane fire pits during high fire season. You should always check local fire restrictions, however, although most often you only need to sign up for a free campfire permit. In this article, I will go over the Outland Living Firebowl Propane Fire Pit, the various models, and why I now use a refillable propane tank instead of the green, 16oz canisters. IN A NUTSHELL The Outland Living Firebowl is one of the most popular propane fire pits recommended by outdoor enthusiasts for camping, boondocking/overlanding, and backyard gatherings. It is portable, produces pleasant, dancing flames, and outputs sufficient heat to warm up a group of people. It also does unofficial double duty for cooking! I specifically chose the 19″ Firebowl Deluxe 893 model that includes a cover and carry strap for safety and easier transport. It struck me as the version with the best overall value, size, and weight suitable for a group of up to 10 people. Indeed, the first time we used it in our backyard for a California summer evening get-together produced quite an unbearable amount of heat at its highest setting! Safety was my biggest concern in finding a propane fire pit, followed by portability, reliability, and price. The Firebowl 893 Deluxe is certified by the CSA and looks to be sturdy and very well-made. Setup and usage was simple: Connect the pre-attached 10′ hose to a distant, secured, 20lb propane tank, check for gas leak, slowly and gradually light up the burner, and allow the included 4.4 lbs of porous lava rocks to heat up for 5+ mins for a vibrant flame. The heat intensity can then be adjusted through a valve knob — the lower the flames, the longer the fire lasts. A 5 pound propane tank could last about 2-4 hours, whereas a 20 lb would be usable for 7-12 hours according to anecdotes from users across the Internet. Various factors would affect the usage time, including heat setting, weather conditions, and ambient temperature. Do note that Outland Living will ONLY support the use of 20 lb propane tanks as that is what their products were certified for. My research found that 5-20 lb (1-5 gal) tanks are safe to connect to. I also use these cylinders to power the Mr. Heater Buddy indoor heater. What I particularly like about the Firebowl is how quickly a fire could be started/stopped on demand (even when the surrounding campsite is wet), how it burns without any smoke, and that the heat intensity could be controlled — a valuable feature for predictable cooking. Wood and coal fires cannot easily claim those properties. Most importantly, propane fire pits can be used at most places during a campfire ban because they do not produce ember nor damage underneath vegetation. Propane fire pits, of course, also have their disadvantages. They usually are not certified for use other than what they were developed for. That means that cooking, although possible, is discouraged because fire pits like these are designed to produce yellow flames. Those result in soot, a black substance consisting mostly of carbon, that can cause breathing issues, heart disease, and even cancer. Furthermore, grease or food particles can clog the burner and give the fire pit an unsightly appearance — it certainly took some time to clean after a test of some delicious steak grilled in butter, rosemary, and garlic inside a cast iron pan. If you want the taste of charcoal or hear the fire crackling, propane is not able to provide that. Outland Living, in fact, skirts around the question of cooking and using third party products (like glass or non-lava rocks) with a generic statement that its products are not CSA-certified with other products or for use other than a fire pit. Many consumers, myself included, do not see a problem roasting marshmallows/hot dogs or boiling water over a sturdy cooktop grate, but be sure to not let any drip or fall into the pit. That would make for some messy cleanup or clogged burner holes! Outland Living has a natural gas conversion kit available for use at home, and the Deluxe version of the Firebowl comes with a carry strap and lid. The latter helps keep children and animals away from the cooling lava rocks while also holding said rocks in place during transport. Camping is just not the same without a campfire, right? With fire restrictions increasingly more common in California and with our family also doing more dispersed camping, a portable, safe fire pit has become one of our favorite camping accessories to bring along. The Outland Living Firebowl 893 Deluxe fits perfectly in our Yakima SkyBox roof carrier and with that, we now have access to warmth, a natural TV show of flames, and cooking as needed. When there is no smoke, there also is no smelling like smoke! I cannot wait to use it during colder weather in a few months! IGNITION AND LOW FLAMES Propane tanks and appliances have a built-in excess flow safety device. The Firebowl’s is located in the hose and those not aware may think their fire pit or propane tank is defective when it actually is a safety feature. If pressure builds up too fast in the hose, the hose regulator will limit the flow, keeping the flame size low and not responsive to the gas knob. TROUBLESHOOTING A LOW FLAME - Turn off the gas at both the propane tank and fire pit ends - Open the fire pit gas valve to release pressure and close again - Disconnect and reconnect the hose from the propane tank - VERY SLOWLY open the propane tank’s valve. Going too fast will release too much pressure and trigger the hose safety device again - Perform a leak test around the valve and hose -- This should be done at least once a year -- One simple way is to mix soap and water and spray onto the valve and hose -- If you see bubbles forming or smell propane, you may have discovered the leak and should shut down the gas immediately --- Wait an hour for the remaining gas to dissipate before disconnecting the hose. Take the part in for inspection - If there is no leak, proceed to igniting the fire pit IGNITING THE FIRE PIT - Manufacturer recommends 80″ (7′) clearance above and 36″ (3′) surrounding the fire pit -- No combustible surface should be underneath - Ensure the propane tank is at least 36″ (or 3′) away from the fire pit – THIS IS IMPORTANT! -- If possible, put the tank into the included stabilizer ring to keep it from tipping over - With the propane tank’s gas valve already SLOWLY opened, light up a match or lighter slightly above the fire pit - VERY slowly open the gas valve on the fire pit until the fire ignites BURN TIME CALCULATION BTU (British Thermal Unit) measures the amount of heat (energy) it takes to raise 1lb of water a single 1F. It is commonly used with heaters and air conditioners. There is 91,500 BTU of energy in 1 gallon (4.24 lbs) of liquid propane. To calculate how many hours are available for the fire

Awesome Fire Pit
We just used this for the first time camping this weekend. We love that it is so potable and has the carrying handle. We keep our propane tank in a milk crate so we didn't need the ring that came with it. We liked that the hose was so long and the heat it puts out is amazing! We had it lit in the morning and in the evening because it is so easy to light. I would highly recommend it.

Easy to use. Easy to control. Easy to Assemble
I bought this from Amazon as a "Used" like new unit. It was discounted due to being a return. It arrived in the original box and appeared to be new never used or assembled. I assembled it and it worked perfectly. Our friend has the same one and we liked it enough to go buy one. We take this when we go camping. Its great for having a quick fire especially on a rainy day. It puts out enough heat to stay comfy. On our camper we can leave the awning out and have a fire under the awning. It puts out plenty of heat but not enough that it would damage the awning. Also great if the area is under fire ban because there is no sparks or ash etc.

Great buy, better than expected
We were the only campers with a fire due to high wind fire ban. It was cold camping weekend and we were very pleased with our fire pit! Used 1 propane tank in 2 nights, we were nice and warm and the dog was not hiding from the flames. We should have got this ages ago.

Fire good
Better than my mr. heater. 360 degrees of heat to gather round. Nice to have a fire where you can't. More entertaining than TV.

Works great
I wasn't sure the carry straps would work very well but everything on this is awesome

Hot or hotter? Definitely works, bit heavy
This is only transport friendly if using the clever transport straps, which don't stay on unless you keep tension. This could be annoying if setting up in the dark/getting it out of the trunk. I love it though. I hope this brand comes out with a cooking grate to put over the top. I used 1 of the 3 bags of supplied lava rock in the middle, and 10 lbs of the rounded fishtank pebble style of fire glass on top/ the sides. I need to redo this with mesh underneath (like other reviewers mentioned) if I want to transport this. I hope Outland comes up with a cooking grate to put over this, but even the lowest setting is too hot (I put a Lodge griddle over the top). Within 2 minutes the griddle surface was 520 F, a bit too hot too cook on but not terrible if you're quick. I think it would be possible to cook on if there was an elevated grate.

Great Firepit!
The media could not be loaded. The gas line is a great length, 10ft, better than most at 5ft. The metal has a great finish that seems of nice quality, and will hopefully keep it from rusting for a long time. The included rocks do a great job at dispersing the gas for a more natural flame and color, and the red glow from the rocks gives more heat and ambiance. The valve on the front is similar to that of a gas grill, and feels like a quality piece. The cover is nice to keep the rocks and the firepit clean. The carry strap uses an elastic to stay tight, which hopefully stays tight enough over time! I'll update the review if the carry strap usefulness is degraded over time. Overall, I'm extremely pleased! It's a great size for being portable, but not being ammo can tiny... Highly recommended!

Perfect for camping
The media could not be loaded. Camping on the North West Coast of Scotland. Tent up, fire on, amazing sunset. What more could you ask for. A lot of campsites do not allow fire pits but will allow a fire bowl powered by propane gas. Clean, no mess, no wood to carry, minimal fire risk if positioned correctly. Even on half setting there was a lot of heat coming from it. We put in all the lava rock that came with it. One bag not enough really to cover the burners adequately. Really adds to the atmosphere of an evening. Very portable with the carrying straps/handle. You could really take this anywhere as long as your propane tank isn't too big. Beach, Garden etc..

A good alternative for the Fireban
There are several different types of Outland Firebowls out there. We got the one which comes with the 10 ft hose, regulator, rocks, spare rocks and carry kit. The carry kit is just great and i like it very much. It keeps the hose nicely wrapped around the bowl, holds the lid in place and you carry it from you truck to where ever you want to put the bowl down with one hand. The rocks are very light weighted. But there also very dusty when they came out of the bag. So i actually took the time and washed them with clean water under the sink. All of them. And i am glad that i did, because it opened clogged up pores on the rocks and no dust in the fire pit at all. I let them dry over night and placed them nicely in the bowl the very next day and lit it. First i was disappointed as a few little blue flames appeared. On high flame it was just a "mea" Well i guess i have to read the manual, i thought. And glad that i did so. There are a few things you should put in to consideration: Follow the Steps in the manual. For instance open the Propane bottle slowly, put lighter in the bowl and then open slowly the valve on bowl. Give it a bit time to heat the rocks up and then voila you are in business. I tried it out in my insulated but not heated single wide garage and i enjoyed it. After about ten minutes i could feel some warms coming up and i sat there and watched the flames play and wished i would had a mug of hot steaming well spiced red wine. As for the consuming of propane i can't say anything yet and have to trust the manufacturer which says you get about 7 hours out of high and about 13 hours out of low flame on a 20 pounder. I guess the future will tell Anyway here are to my opinion the pros and cons. pros: very easy to assemble very portable light weighted makes a nice flame it seems a good quality cons: a bit of a hissing noise I bought it mainly for camping trips when a fire ban is in control. Also if you are careful enough you can still roast marshmallows or non greasy sausages like European wieners. I would have given 5 stars if it wouldn't have been for the hissing which of course is normal when you use gas. All in all i am happy with this item and i am hoping i get lots of camping trips or yard and garage evenings out of it. I also will rewrite this review if something significantly changes.

Perfect for my back porch!
This propane fire bowl came with lava rocks, a lid, hose with attachment, and even a cover. It attches to the same propane tanks that you buy for your BBQ, producing a warm, large, cozy fire. I love that it only takes a minute to set up and turn on. The only minor note I have for improvement would be an ignitor button. This unit starts best with a long-neck BBQ lighter that you can purchase separately. The best part is when I’m done, I just shut it off and go inside - no worry about leaving a fire burning, like with a wood-burning fire bowl. This extends enjoyment of my back porch, in time for the holidays, and my whiskey. Excellent, excellent product.

UPDATED : BETTER FEELINGS ABOUT THESE
I first ordered this fire pit without the straps and cover. It arrived on time. BUT: According to the user manual there should be FOUR bags of lava rocks. Two labelled medium, one labelled large and one labelled spares. What was in the box was TWO bags with no label and various sizes. NO LARGE BAG. ONE SPARES BAG! I contacted Amazon, and they said that shouldn't have happened and to send it back with a replacement on the way for next day. At the same time, i upgraded to the one with cover and straps. SO, all will be good or so i thought .... When i opened the replacement, again only THREE BAGS of lava rocks... THREE with no label and NO SPARES BAG. NOW: Not only are they screwing up on the quantity / types of lava rocks, BUT i thought this was made in North America, cause i try to avoid letting China have any of my money any more ... GUESS WHAT?? Made in China GRRRRRR As for the pit, it does seem to be well built.. hopefully it will last. OH and the area on the cover where they pop riveted their name plate onto it actually leaves 4 holes where water could get in if exposed to rain.. BAD design there. AND it would have been nice IF they actually had a handle on the cover to make it a lot easier to put on / off. I will look for a nice handle and add that myself. Think i can seal the nameplate holes with a bit of silicone rubber. LASTLY, before sending first one back, i decided to fire each one up and check how well they burned. The replacement burns much better and more evenly. ( so the return is going to look used, but this is a lot of money to not get a proper functioning device. ) I will be calling or emailing Outland. and ask what the "bleep" is going on with the quantity of rocks and hopefully they will send me the amount they claim in the user guide.. I will update this review with the outcome of that contact. UPDATE: According to Outland, theychanged the way / amount of lava rocks being shipped with these; and that the 'wrong' user manuals were in the box which did not reflect these changes. They did send me a few extra rocks at no extra charge so i have increased my rating from 3 stars to 5 stars to reflect good customer service. We have enjoyed about 12 evenings usding it until it finally turned too cold before winter. For winter storage, i removed all the rocks.. gave it a good cleaning and put it all back into the original box until spring.
