It was an additional SmartKey for our second dog!!
We are still working on getting the dogs to use the door. This one was a second smartkey for our second dog. The smartkey works well, but the clicking sound from the door scares the dogs. We have left the smartkeys on their collars so they get used to the weight of it. After three weeks my husband noticed the bottom had fallen off one of the smartkeys. The dogs run all over the backyard and I figured it was a loss. Luckily we found it under the couch. Be sure that it is secured very well.

Very easy to attach
Love the freedom, it gives us for the dog to be able to come and go because of the electronic key.

Provided split ring is no good
These keys seem to function as needed, but the split ring provided to attach to the collar is terrible. In three months, my 3 dogs have LOST three keys, leaving me to search for a better attachment method.

What you should know ....
Talked to the company today because after 17 days the battery died and it wasn't a battery issue at all - the customer service rep had me open the key contraption up, pull up on the little metal piece inside, try again and now it works - so don't assume the battery is dead again, try just adjusting the little metal piece inside so it touches the battery. But here's some more info I've learned - I've been buying whole new keys for the last 15 months at $12-$15 each every 2 months - had Googled a year ago on how to change the battery and found you can't, they have this product locked down so you can't just switch out the battery - but there are YouTube videos on how to "break" it in order to switch the battery and glue it back together. I didn't want to do that and have been buying a whole new key contraption but you can buy just the lid/battery part for ~$4-$5 or the company has a program they'll autoship the lid/battery portion (free shipping) for about $4. each which is much cheaper than the $12-15 I've been paying. Am I happy? No. The little metal piece inside shouldn't fail such that the dog door doesn't work for my dog. After spending hundreds on this dog door and having it installed, I should just be able to replace the battery without buying new parts for it every 2 months. Happier yes, but happy no.

I love the convenience
The convenience of the smart door with the smart key is absolutely wonderful. We are now able to keep our animals in or out as needed unlike before with a doggie door that does not lock. We now have no more unwanted animals coming into our home. The smart key works great and we have had no problems with it at all. The reason I purchased a second key was because it had hung too low on her collar and she liked to nibble at it. But now we have it higher up and have had no problems since then. The best thing about this doggie door is being able to have multiple smart keys so all your pets are able to use it. One great thing is that when the battery gets low you will see a flashing red light on the smart key so then you know it's time to purchase a Nother battery. The batteries are easy to find on Amazon. I highly recommend this item. We will never go back to just a hole in the wall :-) we now have more security and peace of mind and nothing is better than that.

Only unlocks and locks. DOES NOT OPEN.Useless with multiple dogs
Theyre ok. They lock and unlock the door until the door battery runs out . they DO NOT REPEAT DO NOT OPEN AND CLOSE THE DOOR AUTOMATICLY .i should have read the discription better this is my bad. Plus the locking and unlocking procedure takes way too long for impatient dogs and it's disturbingly loud 4 both dog and human alike quality is fine but in the long run having six Foster dogs it was just a big waste of time and money I find myself locking and unlocking the door just as easily with the buttons on the door itself as my poor stupid dogs keep running into the damn thing before it unlocks or are scared away from it because of the noise. Add to that these things are bulky enough for my dogs to want to chew in them...actually on each others( which sadly is why im not returning them .. Sigh) and ate a bit to spendy if you have more than 2 or 3 dogs...as a foster its also frustrating that the food itself only allows you. Add 5 dogs. Period...yes I know any sane person wouldn't have more than 5 wigs...but of course mine rotate as they are rescued and adopted so again virtually useless. all in all I can't complain( well thats just not true, as is evident) They do what they say they will do but dont do what I needed them to do. But since PetSafe is a respected brand I'll be nice and go ahead and give them three stars (I wanted to give them one and a half)

Better than the alternatives
These little "keys" are okay. You don't have much choice if you like the dog door and we mostly do. We're trying to keep the cat in but somehow he's gotten out the door twice. Both times, he was panicked in the backyard that he couldn't get back in. So that we're still fine tuning. As for these "keys", the battery doesn't come out (at least we've not had any luck) so if the battery dies, you have to buy a replacement key to screw in the bottom with the new battery. So far, the problem has been losing the bottom/battery part! First got the door, a few weeks in I notice the one dog is missing her key. After a long hike of course. Replacement bottom went in (it's like a 45* turn from open position to locked, it's ridiculously tiny for such a necessary part) and we added a dot of superglue to hold it in. This worked for several months until I found her missing her bottom part again. Went to screw in a new bottom and there was a crack in the side. Oops. Whole new key instead with the superglue. As a side note, I found the bottom just today so that's nice, I have another spare. So why do I keep buying them? Because it's better than no door and having to let the dogs in and out as the cat loves the dog door. We live on a busy road and want the cat to stay alive so trying to keep him trapped inside. Suggestion for use: if the dog's collar is small enough, thread it through the hole at the top, use some thread and stitch it up several inches away from the metal tags. Those tags interfere with the signal sometimes. If your dog's collar is too wide to go through, get some heavy duty button thread and stitch it to a similar position. You just have to check it occasionally to make sure the thread hasn't come unstitched.

Quality
Not as good a quality as the originals that I first bought or came with the door. You have to be carful not to over tighten the battery or it will split the casing and the battery then falls out. For the money paid not the best quality especially when it on the collar of a miniature Schnauzer who loves to play rough and tumble with her brother.

Flimsy and bulky
Flimsy and not very useful for large playful dog breeds, mine broke each other’s off within days. Too bulky for the collar, especially if you have a smaller dog

Loud
The unlocking us very loud. The sound really scares one of my two dogs. The battery that came with the door worked for two weeks. But with all that said , it does its job and the neighborhood cats cat not enter.
