Dark Sky Option Eliminates All Luminescence Of The Glass Globe

We've been searching for the right style of exterior coach lighting for our new home, and were excited to find these fixtures. We liked them so much, we bought two of the large 10" models, and three of the smaller 7" models for our Pacific NW home. The lamps are well-made and should hold up well in this climate. We like the... +Craftsman-like design style along with the following features... +LED dimmable lights are bright and should provide years of service. +The frosted etched glass globe is warm and inviting. +Enamel baked steel construction should last for years. +Dark sky option is exactly what we wanted. That last point, however, is the sticking point. The provided shield that creates the dark sky feature is a very well-made, heavy gauge steel tube. It is totally opaque and, when installed, directs all light downward...so much so that the globe itself is dark and cold. There is absolutely no light that leaks through to provide even the faintest illumination of that lovely etched glass globe. the light itself is lovely, but if the dark sky shield is installed, it will never be noticed at night except for the strong beam of light directed down to the ground. This is a real shame, because the beauty of the light is totally eliminated. How much nicer this light would be if just a little light was allowed to seep through to illuminated the glass globe. As a test, I created my own "dark sky" shield which allows a soft light to emanate through to create a soft luminescence within the globe. This allows the intrinsic beauty of the light design to show, while shielding bright light from shinning into neighbors windows. I really wish the manufacturer would consider modifying their approach. They are hiding the beauty of the light design. If they could do something approximating what I've produced, I'd give their lights a solid 5-star rating. The two pictures accompanying this review are of the light with their dark sky shield, and the one I fabricated. You be the judge, but be aware of what you are purchasing before you buy.
