Densely Written but Good Info

Like all the codices written by Brian Young for Castles & Crusades, one can't help but be impressed by the research behind this. On the negative side, however, Young is an academic and he writes like one, which is to say that the prose tends to be dense and not very engaging. And at times this seems more written for the history or folklore buff than the gamer. No gamer I know (and many are, in fact, academics) wants this much historical detail, nor do they actually want to game in medieval, classical, or ancient Europe. But all Young's books in this series seem to take that premise and are written in that vein. A better approach might have been to presume that most people want to inject a bit of history into their fantasy worlds rather than the opposite. But you can still get useful information out of this. It's just harder than it should be.
