Has plenty of heat!

Will solder (6) 10 gauge wires together (power distribution) with only a little effort. Using it in a vertical position with the handle up will cook your hand with all the rising heat. Doesn't get so hot (temperature controlled) it burns the tip up, just a simple wipe and you are ready to continue soldering. Be careful, the tip is heavy and will contact whatever you lay it on. Includes a simple stand, but I would recommend something not so easy to knock the soldering iron off of. It will easily start a fire. Love it!

Perfect for stained glass

The weller 100 has been perfect for stained glass. You get an instant melt for smoothing out your lines

Updated: *Works* but used and potentially a fire hazard

Update: After some desperation, I plugged the iron back in two days later and waited. No smoke, no smell, seemed okay. So i finished a large project with it and it worked well. I'm not sure what to say; I guess I'll keep it. Do soldering irons have like a breaking in period? I changed my stars from 1 to 4; it was a dramatic start so I won't give it a 5 but it seems to work for now so we'll see. I bought this iron despite the reviews that stated it may be used because I have a stained glass project due this week and thought that used may not mean bad. When I received the iron, it was clearly opened and used because the package was opened along the side as if it was slid out as discretely as possible (which is more suspicious than just the idea that someone opened it, used it, and changed their mind). Also the iron tip clearly had solder melted on. Again, I decided to give it a chance and plugged it in. It started smoking, had a sharp chemical smell, and I watched the neck turn from silver into amber and then purple. It started making a crackling noise so I immediately unplugged it because I was scared of a fire hazard. Please, please do not take a chance on this seller.

Works well but was used.

Everything works fine but the packaging was partially open in a way you Gould get the iron out and back in and there was already solder on the tip as if it had been used. I’m not super worried about it but I think that’s pretty shady since it’s being sold as a “new” item. Open package and used items are sold at a discounted price… Also there are enough reviews like this where the product is clearly used they obviously know this is an issue that they’re choosing to ignore.

This Is Not For Soldering Surface Mount Stuff

I don't care what they say. Trying to solder surface mount chip capacitors is not so easy with this iron. Plus, it makes a big burn mark. However, doing soldering of Plate Glass forming perhaps leaded, or stained glass architecture, it holds its own. It's very important to keep the tip clean and wet with fresh solder and the right flux, and a good wipe with a paper towel right before applying the junction heat makes for very neat flows.

Dangerous

Middle part staring turning dark grey then red like it was burning, also making a crackling sound. Didn’t even feel safe to try using. Sending it back for refund. Knew I should’ve paid the extra $50 for the Hakko FX 601, going to be purchasing that one instead Edit: I let it cool down then made sure the pieces were together properly. Seemed to be working well after. I think I just panicked when I saw the middle part turning colours because of a negative review I read. Did the job for my first stained glass piece.

This item was dangerously defective.

When I plugged in this soldering iron it began to burn up. It was red hot then started to smoke. But the heat didn't reach the tip. It wouldn't melt any solder. What a waste of time and money, although I was refunded by Amazon. I had purchased this item based on a personal recommendation. After my experience I read reviews and was shocked to realize that many purchasers had to exchange this item a few times before it worked. It is too dangerous an item not to be properly inspected before selling and way too expensive for the lack of quality this Weller item reflects.

poor continual heat production

Purchased for stained glass use. Commonly used by others doing same with satisfactory results. As of today Nov 3 2021, iron will not maintain constant heat when in use. After 10-15 minutes seems to loose heat and will not melt standard 60-40 solder even when held on area for 15 or more seconds. Intricate seams then are impossible because of heat loss. Changed tips, but still #7, to no avail. Purchased Oct 12, 2020 Ret window was Nov 17 , 2020 Prod support window was Jan 16, 2021 Is there not a 1 yr product warranty or anything like that? I would like to return this.
