Roof ventilator fan
Had it operating for the whole summer in NJ with a dark shingled roof. Does the job. A little on the noisy side compared to previous fan with same rating. Strangely got quieter after a couple months of use. The noise was a mild hum heard in the living space below. As with any other fan of this type I suggest inspecting and oiling the motor bushings after three years of service or you'll be replacing the unit after 5 years. I managed to get fifteen years out of my first fan with re-oiling but I let it lapse one time where the bushings started to seize. I re-oiled but with loose bushings the noise became objectionable requiring a new unit. Oct. 18, 2015 - Update: The fan still functions as designed. However, a word of caution to perspective power roof fan users. Recently I stopped using my power roof ventilator as I noticed it was pulling substantial volume of conditioned air from the living spaces. This in spite of plenty of properly functioning soffit air intake and well sealed ceiling fixtures to minimize "air bypass". The fan creates negative pressure in the whole house envelope and will pull-in hot humid air from the outside (summer time) to replace the cool conditioned air that just got sucked into to the attic and exhausted by the fan. Actually, you are using the conditioned air of your living space to cool down your attic space. There is also the possibility of dangerous carbon monoxide being drawn into the house through chimney "back draft" in homes with combustible fuel appliances such as hot water heaters and heating furnaces. Winter time use of roof fans with humidistats to alleviate attic humidity and frost in colder regions can also be deadly as documented in several instances. Building Science studies have shown that most attic power ventilators result in additional energy losses when the power used by the fan and loss of conditioned air is calculated. Bottom line is to make certain your attic has plenty of properly designed passive ventilation and a well insulated attic floor. Attempting to compensate for insufficient passive attic ventilation with an attic fan actually wastes energy and money and can be dangerous. For those with aroused curiosity about the topic please google "power roof ventilators".

size is deceiving
unit is smaller than most replacements, I am concerned that the flashing may not prevent leaks as well as the old one, very, very noisy. once installed no simple way to readjust thermostat. have to access attic to change tempter setting.

Don't waste your time or money!
I bought this and didn't like it right out of the box! First off was the cheap plastic covered dome! How many years do you think that is going to last before it splits and leaks water right into your attic. Then guess where the water goes from there? Right through your ceiling! Won't have that problem with the normal metal domes!!! Also they mounted the thermostat right beside the motor which also is right up under the cheap plastic dome. Guess what happens next? Inaccurate temp readings of your attic with the sun beating down on the black plastic lid so it kicks the fan on way sooner than what it should for what temp you want your attic to get to before kicking the fan on. It should be at least two feet away from the vent/motor like all other normal fans! When this thing started up it was the nosiest fan I have ever heard! It sounded about like a jet engine. You could hear it from just about any where in the house and you could sure hear it any where from outside the house! This unit only lasted a little over a month before I heard it one day kicking on and off. Long story short the motor was getting hot and the unit was going into thermo cut out. I went into the attic and felt the motor and it was definitely hot. Just to make sure I turned the thermostat down to where I could hear the contacts inside it make contact. At that point the fan should have turned on but it was definitely in thermo cut out. So.............. it was short lived and was getting replaced. I bought and installed one like I installed in a previous house I had about six years ago with the same CFM as this and I had to cut this hole out an inch and a half bigger. Also my new one has a five blade fan as this one had a four blade with a steeper pitch. So, smaller hole, four blades at a steeper angle and 1600 CFM? No wonder it sounded like a jet engine. The motor bushings were still quiet and the fan spun freely so I have no idea why the motor was over heating and kicking off. Needless to say I carefully removed this unit as to no to tear up any shingles and I carefully launched it off of my roof twenty feet onto the ground! Best I've liked it since the day I got it!

Not powerful enough.
Not powerful enough to pull the hot air out of my little house at night.

Effective, but loud.
Good product, as described and expected. We had professional installation and, per the other reviews, mounted as high on the roof as we could. It is still very loud, but i somewhat expected that from other reviews. I would suggest you do NOT mount in the attic above a bedroom. We did not and you can still hear It from most rooms on the top floor and when you are outside in back. That said, I'm still very happy we have it - it's worth it.

Replaced with same model
I purchased this to replace the same exact model that was over 15 years old. The new one is much quieter. We don't remember the old fan ever being this quiet. I got nervous and actually went back up to the attic to check on it because we couldn't hear it like we could the old one. I saved the old one and plan on buying the replacement blade. The amount of money these fans save when it comes to using AC is fantastic. AC doesn't come on near as often and keeps the house cool even when it's 90+ out. Great product.

Moves a lot of hot air
My 10 year old Broan (which died) was a 1100 cfm this one is 1600 cfm, also the fan blade design is totally different. It is noisier than my old one because it's moving much more air, but it's not annoying. However the fan kept turning on & off in short periods, so I had to take the temperature sensor box off & remote it away from the fan so that the fan would stay on longer & cool the attic. It's stupid having the temperature sensor right next to the fan because it cools the sensor before the attic is cool.

This makes a huge difference....
Installed this in a 3 level split and on the first day the upper rooms stayed significantly cooler. The A/C unit does not run as much and can now keep up. There is more even cooling between the floors, no more ice cold basement and warm upper floor. I knew this would make a difference for my customer but the results far exceeded both our expectations. I installed one for him in his house in southern Alberta, yes, we get hot here, it's been 30-35 degrees celcius here for weeks now and will continue. He has had one installed in his house in Vegas and it does a great job there too! I can't say enough good things about this attic fan. Oh yah, super easy to install if you have half a clue about roofing and electrical. Drop me a line if you want to discuss details of this item.

Works very well, noise is not as bad as other reviews
The item was installed when I had my roof re done last week, so far its been working great, no problem wiring it up with the bypass switch. Noise level is there, its not quiet but its not a locomotive but you can hear a hum inside and outside the house. Upstairs is like night and day, rooms are much much cooler after installing this, I had the issue of the basement freezing, main floor cool and upstairs warm, you could feel the heat as you go up the stairs now it feel like the main floor what a difference. Make sure you have enough ventilation on the soffits to suck in cool air .

Incorrect thermostat control
Bought the fan end of last year. Was installed recently. Set to 100 deg F.. Fan would not turn on until 115 deg F.. Tried a few trials on thermostat setting but still operates erratically. Can somebody send me a replacement thermostatic? I bought a new thermostatic over a year ago for an old fan and it was working beautifully!

Repaired existing attic fan.
I bought this unit, but only used the motor, and the mounting arms to repair an existing MasterFlow attic fan. The motor sits higher than older units, so the new fan blade is very close to the dome lid. Thus I had to refit using the older fan blade. This of course results in a lower CFM, but because of the weather (boiling hot), that's about the extent I was willing to do at the time. Still made a HUGE difference, the entire upper floor cooled in a matter of hours as the fan cooled the ceiling. There are lots of people who will pontificate about a vacuum set up sucking up air conditioned air from the house, and wasting electricity. But (being a mechanical engineer), I made sure that I have almost 200% more soffit intake venting than the attic fan requires. It does make a huge difference. Only slight downside is that there is a very minor low frequency rumbling when the fan is on. You don't get something for nothing. In the fall, when it is cooler, I'm going back to the roof, and replacing the old housing and installing the rest of the Broan. One thing to note that this unit is not CSA approved, so technically cannot be sold in Canada. If there is a warranty issue, you cannot get parts sent to Canada.
