Get clean water at your sink.
Our kitchen faucet has an under-the-sink GE water filtration system. I regularly replace water filters. I found GE SmartWater FXSVC Replacement Filters fit well. It is a two-stage system, the filter with a grey cap is a pre-filter (stage 1) and the filter with a green cap is a post-filter for stage 2. These filters reduce lead, asbestos, select volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other contaminants from water. As cysts, chlorine odor and taste, sediment, rust, etc. are eliminated the water tastes good. I understand depending on water quality and usage the filters are good for about 600 gallons or six months.

Installation Instructions - Which Filter Goes First - Field Report
There seems to be a lot of confusion about the installation instructions for GE's dual stage water filter set FXSCV. Here are my findings. Instructions: GE clearly states install the green capped filter on the left (inlet) side. See picture. Weight: I weighed both filters, the green cap was 420 grams and the grey cap 405 grams (~4% difference). Cross-section: I cut a cross section out of both of my used filters. Both are dense carbon block material. Some in the reviews suggested the first filter was a looser pre-fiter, but both are definitely dense carbon. Conclusion: While many on this forum disagreed with GE's filter order (about half said the GE instructions are "wrong"). However, after this bit of research I'm going to default to GE's recommendation and have installed the green cap on the left (inlet) side and the grey filter on the right (outlet side). This is what I did on the previous installation and clean tasting water for 6+ months. Note that the instructions say to run 15 minutes = 9 gallons before using. This seems like a lot, however with a 600 gallon target lifetime I'm also going with GE's instruction and will pre-run at least 5 gallons before drinking the water. One more tip: Use a rubber mallet and the provided wrench to break free the sump housings when removing them, as they can be quite stuck in place after a few months. Thanks for reading and good luck. - California Steve

New ones don't fit my old housing.
GE has changed the filter diameter - the original one is 2-3/8", the new one is 2-1/2", it won't fit in the housing. My housing is from 1999, but still....why the change? Guaranteed fit - isn't working out so good. Maybe GE will send me a new housing :) (for the price of the filters, they should give the housings away!)

(WAS a ) Good Price for good Filters
Update 9/21/2022: I bought these filters 19 times from Amazon at a good price each time including the last set I bought 6 months ago. I went to order another set a few days ago and the price went up to just under 61 bucks for the set. This is unbelievable since I paid about 48 bucks or so for the previous order from Amazon. I checked The Orange Big Box Store's web site and they were 48 bucks there! I was out shopping and I bought it at the Orange place. Amazon, HOW CAN YOU DO A PRICE INCREASE LIKE THAT? Update 3/28/19: Although some reviewers said these filters on previous purchases fit OK, but more recent purchase did not fit their filter housings, my most recent purchase in March, 2019 fit just fine into my housings and the filter elements were identical in size to the spent ones I removed this time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have been using under counter water filtration systems for many years now, and the current one uses these GE Cartridges. Amazon's price on them is very good, and I believe these cartridges do a great job of removing impurities from the water, including rust and sediment, etc with the first stage cartridge and the second cartridge is supposed to remove chlorine, spores, mercury and other baddies from the water. I really have no way of knowing it is doing the job, but I rely on the manufacturers statement on the product, and it is approved by the NSF agency.

Have used this filter for a five gallon bottled water bottle for 4-5 yrs. I am on a well and donot have my water tested on a regular basis. I use a $15.00 water tester that shows the filtered water slightly better than the tap water. There is a red slime that comes from the primary filter of the "FXSVC" filter that remained in the canister, the "FXSLC" dubbed as the best fliter from GE had the same but only when it was new. When I change filters, I cut the primary apart with a hack saw and discovered there was a red paper wrap. That is probably where the red slime looking stuff came from. Food for thought: is there a reason GE uses the red paper in the filters, other than for filtration? At any rate, I continue to use the filtration unit and feel better about my drinking water because of it. When it comes time to replace your filters you can buy them for about 1/2 of what Home Depot charges, on line. Last I used was Filters Fast, they seem to be a good company to order from.

Excellent water filter, but getting expensive and harder to find
This filter set gives a very noticeable and worthwhile improvement in water quality. Though it is getting more expensive and harder to find.
