Generally a good product, annoying purchase and install experience.

Overall, I think this is a good product. I have quite a few Wemo switches and dimmers in my home and use Apple products exclusively, so having a product that doesn’t need the Wemo app is great to me (I’ve only ever used the Wemo app for pairing the switches and then use Home and Siri thereafter, so I’m glad to no longer have to use the Wemo app with this switch). Pairing the switch with Home was generally easy, though you really have to pay close attention to the instructions for the NFC pairing to work (there’s an actual pairing mode on the Wemo, where the light blinks blue, that the switch has to be in for you to be able to bring your phone near the switch and have it pair). But this pairing process is way better than typing in the HomeKit code or pointing the camera at the code to add it. I am giving this a 3-star review for two reasons; - When the switch arrived, it was clearly a used product. The box wasn’t sealed, the switch was dirty, and the face plate was missing. I had to return the switch and get a new one from Amazon, which thankfully happened same-day, but still annoying to spend money on a product and get a clearly used one. - The installation/wiring of this switch is ANNOYING. The instructions say you can either push the wires into the back of the switch and tighten each terminal’s screw, or create a hook for each wire and tighten around the terminal. Creating a hook and wrapping around the terminal, as is common on light switches, is impossible with this product. Unless you are using the jumper wire Wemo provides, which they only provide 1 for the 4 wires necessary for this switch, no standard electrical wire is going to fit in the channel and be able to hook around the terminal. I tried every which way and it’s not going to happen. Pushing the wire into the hole and tightening seems easy, except fully tightening the terminal doesn’t keep the wire in. It came out with a light tug over and over. I eventually found a trick; if you loosen the terminal screw, press the screw with your thumb to push it “back,” put the wire in the hole, then tighten the screw, it seems to work. This is super counterintuitive because you’d think the wire needs to go in a specific place to tighten, but if you look where the wire fits into the terminal, it has a sliver of a gap to fit in and make the connection. Overall, I’d say installation for this switch is much harder than any other Wemo I’ve used before, but I like the switch and its pairing much more.

Wire terminal screws strip out and requires two taps to activate in 3-way mode. Do not buy!

Just for the record, I am a big WEMO fan, with over 40 of the Gen 1 switches installed in my house for the last 4-5 years. These new switches are a step backwards for WEMO. They redesigned the wire attachment method on the back of the switch, they no longer have wires (flying leads), instead they have terminal screws like a normal switch. I was excited about this, seeing that this would help with eliminating having to stuff the additional wires from the switch into the electrical box. Unfortunately they are not well supported on the inside and strip out way to easy! I stripped out the first two switches trying to attached the wires., 4 switches out of the 10 that I bought were stripped. When the screw/nut get stripped, the nut on the inside of the switch becomes free to move around and shorts against the electrical board on the inside of the switch and burns the switch. Once stripped, the $50 switch has to be replaced, a really poor design which they have to fix. I would not recommend this switch for this reason. Another reason I would stay clear of this switch is that WEMO does not tell you, but when you put this new Thread designed switch in a 3-way configuration, the switch requires TWO taps to activate, which is very confusing, and not intuitive. My family made me pull out the ones that I did get to work out after a few days because they hated having to hit the switch twice to get them to work. The third reason I would steer clear of this switch is that there is no light on the front of the switch that indicates whether it is on or not. If you are planning on installing in a room where you can see the that the light is on, no problem, but if the lights you are turning on are not visible, then then with a 3 way configuration, you have no idea if the switch is on or off??? With normal switch, you can see whether it is on or off, but not with these. All previous versions had a neat light that would tell you if they were on of off, these Thread version do not have a indicator light... I assume they did this to save energy, but for smart switch users, it is a huge drawback. Of course like stated in all reviews for WEMO products, their Customer Support is terrible... Tried to contact them numerous times to find out why the two taps, but all they did was acknowledge they got my request and did nothing and several days later, they sent me an email claiming that they closed out the ticket! The Gen 1 and Gen 2 switches are great, but it seems WEMO has some work to do to get theses Thread based switches to be ready for use in out homes.
